I have a 86' sammi, When I first start it, it high idels at 1100rpm. When the choke kicks off at normal operating temp, the engine starts to run rough and will stall unless your petaling the accelerator and hold it above 1500 rpm. I believe its the hitachi carb, probally needs a kit but this thing, It's scarey. This ain't no holley dad. Whats your suggestions? Weber conversion? But does weber mean electric fuel pump. This is just a stock sammi used as a deer camp vehicle and I hate to spend more than half of what I paid for the thing for a carb.. But I need it to run. Thanks for the responses. I posted pics last year when I did some mods for hunting. Note the top drive.

That is crazy cool. And here i've been messing around with tree stands all these years.

Your high and low idle seem way off. Cold idle is usually around 2000 until it warms then should drop to around 900 or 1000. (those are just a guess but check the manual for accurate warm and cold idle settings) I would start with adjusting those two things first. Check the FSM which can be downloaded from

Well I think its other than the carb, I have a dead cylinder. I have fire to all cyl. but I have some more things to check. probally why it will not idle. Might be the engine. hope not. A compression ck and a check of the valve lash will tell all.

Well its fixed. Last night I ran some marvel oil doen the carb and ran it till it did not smoke, Today, I went to the shop and started it to move it to begin testing. As it ran, I noticed it always drops off to idle fairly rapidly but this time it did not. I went ahead and let it warm up and it dropped down to 1100 rpms but still running rough, I like it to idle at 1100 because when I drive it from the top when I am hunting, it's perfect speed in 4low in 2nd gear. A friend told me to take a pair of needle nose plires and pinch each vacuume hose. Well I started to do this and wala it idled smooth. The hose from the manifold to the bottom of the air cleaned which I had removed and replaced each time I removed the plemun. SO I went ahead and checked the wires, replaced the cap and it idled even better. I had a leaking valve cover gasket and while changing it checked the valve lash. I drove it and other than a hesitation when I step on the gas from idle its back to normal, ready to go hunt! Thanks for all the advise.
