Just trying to find out a few things.
1. Is any one year better than another?
2. I'll be wanting to pull it behind my motorhome any offroad mods taboo?
3. like I've said in previous posts I'm not interested in doing extreme rockcrawling (it's cool but not for me) mostly trails, ghost towning, Geocaching, and general exploring and want to build it right the first time. I'm thinking 30-31 inch tires what will I need to do this and make a reliable ride and please be spacific as I'm a total newbie to this, although I have over 30 yrs experience with offroad bikes and quads.

Personnally I prefer the 95-96.
Better looking dash and no airbags.
But thats just me ;)

I believe 96 is a 1 year only computer making spares or boonie computer replacment / repairs harder to find.
I have a 1994 1995 1996 & 1998. I like the 1998 the best because it is in the best condition with the lowest miles.
1.8L are known to have T-chain issues due to Hydro chain tensioner & it's relation to the oil viscosity (5w-30 only)
I'd buy any of them for the right price.

I don't remember the years
but get one with the 16V engine
it should also have 26 spline front
axle shafts instead of 22 spline like
the early ones did.
I like the Auto Trans for wheeling but
that is my personal preference, if you
have an auto trans you can get the 5.12
ring and pinion from a Man Trans, with 31s
they are about right, other than that you
would have to get the 5.83s from Calmini
but those will cost quite a bit more.
As far as No No mods, don't turbocharge
it ;D you may never want to get out of it,
it will just be too much fun for you to handle
;)

I like the limited edition 1995 LSI with the 2.7 V-6 with the overdrive automatic.
kinda hard to find, but worth it! ;D ::)

I prefer the 16 valve 1.6 liter motor. It comes in the 95 - 98 2 door models. They just seem to last longer than the 8 valve with less mainenence. Both are good motors though. Just my preference.
The 96 and up also come with 26 spline axle shafts vs 95 and older at 22 spline. For a 31 inch tire this may not be an issue but why take chances! ;)
95 and older come with an "OH SH!T" handle on the passengers side. I kinda like that. 89-92 also have a pocket in front of the handle, also nice.
For what your planning to do with it I think any year will do. Good luck with your purchase.

96 cluster
easy gear swap to 5.12 with the auto and you could always add the 26 spline axle up front 16valves rock over 8
