Title: Anyone here with a Lock Right?
Post by: Icelandic on September 28, 2007, 07:38:00 AM
Is there anyone here that has a Lock right in the rear differential? If so, how do you like it? Is it okey for a DD? Is there a more risk on braking the diff?

I have a lock rite in my sidekick.  I love it off-road I can go a ton of places now.  Sometimes however the locker will make my vehicle slide one way or another when I am try to climb things.  On road not bad for cruising down the highway, sucks bad in the parking lots.  Makes a ton of noise when your turning.  Makes the vehicle jump and jerk when your going slow.  Makes winter driving much harder, need to keep vehicle in 4 wheel drive all winter.

do it; best mod you can do to an off road Vitara; the on road handling is acceptable, and you know it's there. It makes the car yours, coz your girlfriend won't want to borrow it anymore

If I do it and HATE it...is there any trouble in taking it out?

Also about the risk of braking the diff..does it increase?

Friends don't let friends install lunchbox lockers. ::)

I've run them for years, and absolutely HATE them.  I hate the characteristics on and off road.  On road, they make the ass end jump around when shifting and throttling.  They make turns difficult, especially when you need to accelerate quickly in a 90* turn, like at a traffic light or crossing oncoming traffic to enter a parking lot.

Off road, they are unpredicable.  In hard turns, they don't always unlock.  They snap, crackle and pop more than a bowl of Rice Krispies.  They cause a loading/unloading that can result in twisted axles splines or breakage.  They munch locker pins.  Any mod that consumes it's own parts is a bad idea.

Same the money, and install an ARB Air Locker.  Since I started using them, there is no other locker IMHO.  Ask around, you'll find very few who hate their ARBs.

I acutley liked my spool better then the lockright I have now, much more predicable (the spool) but you can't beat the price and they do work ok

and I think any modifcation for and the act of off roading will brake stuff

Like any mod you do to your rig, it takes a little getting used too. I have had a locked rear diff. for many years and have had no problems with it in a DD.

I have found that with my zuki, if I air the tires up to any where above 15psi, the handling of turns is much better. Tight turns go from jumpy to either the locker unlocking like it should or the rig just chirping the inside tire in the turn. and after driving with the locker you will learn to anticipate the torque steer while driving. And the comment about having to be in 4wd all winter is kind of deceiving. I prefer the locker in winter driving over not being locked. I know what the locker does and how it reacts and feel comfortable in slick driving situations.

If I was to redo the locker choice in the rear of my Zuki, I would go with the mini-spool instead of a locker. My new locker is looser than the old one and I like the tighter feel. And an ARB locker is low on my list of mod's due to the coin they want for them.

If you decide to go with the LockRight, interested in a used one? Only has maybe 400-500 miles on it. I would like to swap in a mini-spool in it's place.

Your talking about them being loose.  I have the lock right in the rear of mine and when engage the clutch I hear a thunk nose.  This also happens when I decelerate fast after accelerating.  I checked the u joints and there is no play in them.  If I grab the drive shafts and try to rotate them there is not much play.  Is this extra play in the drive line from the locker?   ???

yes the extra play is from the locker, that is part of what makes them work, one of the main pins slides on a ramp spreading the locker apart and pushing the two halfs into the side gears making them lock into them.
