well, i dont know whether to be happy or sad or anything really, i knew my time would come, and today it did.
not a whole heap to say about it, and it seems the norm for everyone else.
the sound that it made while breaking is something thats hard to forget, although the cursing and cussing after usually make you forget the sound. ÂÂ
i didnt get any pics of when and where it happened, (blame the camera man, he forgot he had my camera amongst the action) but he did take a video clip, i dont know how to post vids though. maybe a screen shot from the clip if anyone is interested.
well, looks like i'm gonna have to look for another front axle shaft, heard it was more practical than just replacing the actual CV. see how it goes.
-
and after breaking the CV, and having no 4 wheel drive, well, actually it was now a one wheel drive, i attempted to get to the top of another hill, but then got stuck of some biggish rocks. nearly rolled, but it was hell funny. got somepics of that too.
AND please excuse my buddy, he seems to be quite attached to himself, please, dont ask me why, i have no idea.

heres some pics of the tiny dirt hill. i couldn't make it up, due to the crossmember catching and centering me.
there was another track next to this one which was quite an easy climb, only i tried to go up that one on some sort of angle, and dropped the front left in a washed out section while at full lock right, and then it went 'bang' or was it 'tang'? anyway, the climb in the pics is mostly soft dirt and was a lot washed out. the one next to it was harder rock based.
these are screen shots from the clip.

The last CV I broke, the only one I
ever broke :) it was just the cage
that holds the balls in place, find a
cage or a used CV and carry a spare
cage so you can do trail fixes
The last thing I want to do is be in
some nasty remote place and need
all my wheels driving to get out and
pop a CV cage

Kind of like loosing your virginity! ;D We are all so proud of you!
I just buy spare axles and swap the whole thing in. I would rather know that I have two good strong CVs. Plus I hate dealing with the dust boots and the grease.. You can usually pick CV's up in the states for about 20.00 to 35.00 US at a wrecking yard.. Not sure what it will cost in your neck of the woods.
I have never actually broken a CV yet but I have a couple in case

The chime from a childrens cereal commercial comes to my head;
"Silly Zuker, CV's are for kids!"

Is that the worst job ever on a car? I hate messing with CVs, the grease gets everywhere and it takes forever to wash it off

I've broken a couple cv's and in almost the same way as you, pounding the pee out of the truck and getting the front wheels off the ground. Sure is fun ain't it ;D. Thanks to Mikes modified axles tho it is a breeze to change them on the trail. 8)

Yup, just a CV by another name, otherwise known as a Birfield.

so whats the secret?

If you look in the article archive there is an setup that Mike Hagen explains how to widen the front end and use the same cv shaft on both sides. 20 minutes and your back on the trail and you only need to carry spare left side shafts. Pretty sweet setup as I've had to change a couple on the trail. It also improves the way the truck drives on and off road.

Allows you to use flanged axles on both sides and you probably won't break them anyways..........

You guys say that the cage on the CV is what gives. Does it split open like a berfield does upon failure? If so, couldn't one just press or weld a reinforcement ring on around the cv cup like the birfield rings for Sammies? I haven't popped a CV yet and hope to avoid doing so in the near future.
-
even though i haven't taken my busted CV joint out yet, i'm assuming its in a lot of little pieces, the cage that is.
when my cv went, it wasn't a simple crack or anything, it sounded like it exploded. so when i find a replacement, i'll take mine out and see exactly what it did, will take pics too.

No, I never split that, There is a steel
cage inside that holds the balls in place,
like a cage on a roller bearing, just with
balls instead of rollers

i fixed the vit today..... took out the axle shaft and inspected the busted CV joint. man, if ever i saw so many pieces in a rubber boot, it would have been today.
i got a drive shaft from the wreckers, its off a 91 model, all same.
i got 6 balls, 6 pieces of the centre section that has splines on it, and the actual cage on the outside that holds the balls in, was in like nearly 13 pieces, and the holes were elongated, is this normal? or was it totally rooted?
i had the digicam to take fotos, but my silly little brother decided to use his discman and drain the batteries AND not recharge them so i dont have pics.
and i got 6 metal splinters too, while trying to clean everything up, and hell yeah its a messy job!
i've decided to stay away from rocks and try to keep all 4 tyres on the ground until i can beef up the front end, so its all mud from now on, o glorious mud.
and i thought i read somewhere that the 26 spline axles were the stronger of the factory ones. truth or lies?
i'll get pics up soon, maybe tomorrow. laters
-
Ya 26 spline axles are the strongest
axle you can get, but you didn't break
an axle, and the CVs are the same ;)
The cage does have a slightly elongated
hole, the center "flower" does not, and
should have no wear on the shoulders
either, if it did, it was worn
