Title: What should i do with my samurai that has a bad body and bad motor but still run
Post by: bjwiley on October 15, 2007, 10:19:01 AM
I have a sammy i bought off of a guy i work with for $100 last year. It still runs but burns oil pretty bad. The body on it is in terrible condition with rust and not to mention the terrible bondo and fiberglass job done from the previous owner. I have thought of just making a buggy out of it by taking the body off and tubing it also swapping a 4.3 in it. My buddy says it isnt worth the time and money. What should i do?

part it ...

bad motor + bad body ... only thing left IMO is some parts.

you could search for a better body to base from and treat the $100 rig as a donor too.

 :o :o All those parts add up. Transfercase $$, Transmission$$, windshield frame$$, Mirror$$,seat belts$$, part the engine$$, axles$$, driveshafts$$

You would be surprized. Fedex ground will ship most of the stuff pretty cheap too. Then put the money into your next one. ;) ;)

I would cut most of the body off then grab an engine out of a Metro (1.3L) and swap it in as an alternative to rebuilding the block that is in it.

Obviously we love playing with these little rigs, but if you want something bigger part it out and look into a Cherokee.  A lot more expensive to build up, but the base can be had pretty cheap with a 4.0L in it.

I have a similar rig but mine was suppose to have a bad engine... after some work and "love" it runs great.  I cut everything off behind the dash and the floor behind the seats and welded up a cage.  I use it all the time to cut trails, haul junk, mark trails and logging roads, etc.  I even let my "less fortunate" buddies drive it if they don't have a wheeler or theirs is being modified.  I have beat this rig and it still lives.  Welded rear, 265 cut MTR's and it rocks.8) I say keep feeding it oil and have some fun!! 8)

The flaw that I see in the plan is the 4.3 swap.  Not only is it expensive, but with that much power, all you will end up doing is breaking parts (shafts, universals, bearings...).  Go for a 1.3 or a 1.6.

And, how about a Metro body on that Sami frame?  The wheelbase looks about right...

I have seen a VW Golf on a Sammy frame that looked pretty interesting.
