I am new here and need some info. I have a '91 Geo tracker and the transfer case is whining and grinding. I have looked online to see about parts to rebuild it and have not come up with anything. Was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for this

Used ones are so cheap I wouldnt bother. They rarely go bad. You can swap another one in for under $100. Actually Ive never heard of one going bad.... are you sure its not the trans?

well what made me think it was the transfer was that the rear drive shaft is loose going into the transfer case. But, I would not swear that is was the case. I have put a 2" calmini lift on it but I don't think that little bit would affect anything.

drive shaft is loose? how so?
I'd drop the drive shaft and check it first (real easy, just remember to drain the tcase first).
Perhaps it's a bad ujoint?

it does not seem to be the u joint, that feels fine. It is loose where the shaft actually goes into the t case. I notice the noise most when on the highway and let off the gas. it makes a loud groaning noise and vibrates until it gets down to a slower speed. It does it every time. same speed. the transfer case is not stuck in gear and everything else is free spinning also (front axles and front drive shaft.

I've had that. It's the bearings in the t-case. The noise followed me when I swapped t-cases between a couple of Kicks. Nothing else was changed but the t-cases and noise went from one car to the next along with the t-case. Still going fine ::)

Sounds like driveline vibration to me. Id Double check the ujoints and make sure they are in phase.

That was the first thing I checked on mine but all seemed ok. The t-case has actually been in three different Kick's, a lwb then a swb then a lwb again and the noise has been in all of them when that particular case is fitted.When I swapped t-cases the noise went with the t-case. I have even swapped in new uni's as I had to swap yokes due to the different splines between the swb and the second lwb(later model).
