I recently had to replace the tranny in my '92 JL. It shifts tight and works fine but It has a high pitched whine coming from the tranny while it is idling. It quits when you push the clutch pedal. This leads me to believe it is the throw out bearing. I have tried to change my clutch adjustment but it keeps on whining.
I had just replaced the throw out bearing in the old transmission, so , I put it on the one I just installed. Was this a mistake? Do I need to drop the tranny again and replace the throw out bearing?
Could it just be temporary and eventually quit?
I have tried adjusting the clutch but I can't get the whine to stop.

the throwout bearing shouldn't be doing anything when idiling, sounds like a transmission bearing problem to me,when you push in on the clutch the tranny input stops turning

Luke is right, i have rebuilt both my trannys for my sammy, and with the whining, it most often was the front countershaft bearing, but i had some other bearings in the trans that were bad as well. still had whining after i replaced my throwout bearing, so i tore it apart! check samuraiparts.com (http://samuraiparts.com) for a trans bearing kit, mine was like 80 bones with shipping and all, cheapest i found on the net, hope this helps.

You might try putting the transfer case in neutral and shifting through the transmission gears. There's a possibility the noise is actually in the transfer case. If the noise goes away with the transfer case in neutral while you shift through the gears, then your transfer case is probably making the whine. Worth a look.

Thanks for the advice , I tried what you said Adam but it is not the transfer case. I think the tranny I bought has a dry bearing. Looks like I will have to drop the tranny again. I see a tranny rebuild in my near future.
Thanks,

mine is whining, but it is in all gears except 4th, and it makes a loud grumbling sound when the engine is idling and the clutch is out. I know it is the bearings, but the problem is that I cant seem to find a 4wd transmission in the junkyards down in southern california, and the transmission in it isnt a good one to rebuild, as there was chunks and flakes of metal coming out of the oil when I changed it last. I even found a piece of a washer (most likely off of one of the gearsets) on the magnet of the drain plug.

Think you can PM me some pointers on ripping the tranny apart? I need to do this myself and after looking at the FSM I now have some questions on talking pats of the tranny apart.

Mine is a geo tracker, so I don't think that a samurai trans would bolt up too well :P I am still debating as to whether I should put a new transmission in it or not. The engine is starting to smoke, and the body, paint and interior is kind of rough. The paint is only starting to look bad on the hood(the paint came off in the shape of the top of the engine). It would make a great off roader project, but its days of being a nice car have been gone since I hit a deer with it.
