Title: transfer case vibration
Post by: burke on October 27, 2007, 01:24:50 PM
I got the transfer case put all back together and now under power the transfer case vibrates like mad and when I push the clutch in it makes a horrible banging sound.

What could I have done wrong?  I did all the measurements and put in the shims.  Could I have gotten bad rebuild parts?  I bought them from Rocky Road.  The transfer case seemed to operate fine when it was out of the car just after the rebuild.

Never mind.  I was out of phase drive lines.   :-[

You mean they were put back together wrong? I think mine are too but I can't tell how they are suppose to go so I have a slight vibration. I can't identify a mark to line them up.

Hmm, Ack must have fallen asleep  :) :) :)

Check out Ack's faq, he has a video showing how to align the driveshafts.

I'll check it now but I sure couldn't find any marks to identify.

I may have been looking in the wrong spot. I think when I get home tomorrow, if they don't try to kill me again at work   :o :o >:( >:(, I'm going to drop my rear drive shaft and check again. Sounds like the vibration will rip the hell out of stuff if you let it go to long. :o :o

You know, I had been running for years without ever checking to see if mine were aligned properly.  Ends up they where, but by accident more then anything else.  :)

The dot is on the end of the spline on mine.  Kind of a pain to see if you don't know where to look.

That was my problem. I wasn't looking in the right spot. Also helps to wipe off the grease. I dropped mine and wiped the grease off and their back in phase now for sure. I feel like an idiot not knowing about this already. I already wiped off the under coat from the p.o. and now I think all my vibration is gone. Even the vibration I had from day one when I took off thru 1st and 2nd gear. I also had them both backwards according to the f.s.m. I don't know what it would matter but that's fixed too. And here I was thinking they might have been out of balance. This thread saved me alot of time, headaches, money and possibly a transmission and transfer case. And it only took about an hour.  ;D ;D 8) 8)
