Title: Starts but won't Stay Running
Post by: wat01 on October 30, 2007, 06:26:23 PM
OK.....
Stock '86 Samurai

I have checked the fuel pump and it seems to be working fine, however when the motor starts it only runs for anywhere from 3 to 6 seconds (sometimes with starting fluid and sometimes without) and then chokes its self out. If I attempt to give it more gas it just makes the situation even worse. I have cleaned the carb as best as I can without taking it apart, but I did take it off the intake to clean it. I really need to see some pics of the choke vacuum hose. I have the ACK's article showing all other vacuum hoses but the choke. The vapor canister is also missing the middle hose that goes to the intake....I can't find where it goes on the intake.

I have adjusted the warm idle and the timing is dead on.

Can anyone let me know if there is something else that I am missing? Is there a fuel regulator?

I'm a newbie and this carb is driving me nuts!

Thanks

Still sounds like the fuel pump. Sometimes the rod that goes to the cam shaft sticks.  The fuel pump is kind of spring loaded so as the rod pushes against it, the spring will push it back against the cam. As it goes back and forth, it pumps fuel to the carb. You would have to pull the fuel from the carb and see if the fuel pump is pumping when you  turn the motor over. You can pick up a new factory pump from suzuki for around $45.00 or call Hawk suzuki and order one that way. The regular auto parts stores are actually a bit more expensive than suzuki for the part from what I have seen.  There is no regulator. I would take a chance on a fuel pump myself just because the symptoms you are describing are identical to the problems I had on my last samurai when the fuel pump went out. It wouldn't hurt to keep a spare anyways. If you get a new one, move it by hand first to free it up. I put one on and it didn't work until I did that, then it was fine. Also, make sure your fuel filter isn't clogged and fuel is getting past it. It's under the passenger side door sort of.

Then again those carbs are pretty complex ;)

ya i would check the fuel filter first it might just have alot of gunk in it and they are pretty cheap anyways.  Do the cheap stuff first! :)

Have you checked the spark plugs to see what they look like. Are they dry (fuel starvation) or black (flooding)?

Guys thanks for the response.

I have already done all of the "cheap" fixes. New fuel filter, new fuel, new distributor cap and rotor, new ignition coil, new plugs and wires. I feel like it has to be something simple. It has not ran in over 6 months because of a wiring issue, however the guy that I bought it from assured me that it ran great before that. I have fixed the wiring issue. It was just the fusible link.

The plugs are fine except for one that is a little oily. I am sure that I have a worn ring allowing that to happen.  ???

I am going to install a new fuel pump tonight and see if that helps.

Daddyizzle....I read an old thread where you plugged some of the vacuum hoses on the carb. Is that still working for you? Any updates? I am using this for offroad only….mainly hunting and some light trails.

It ran o.k. but I found  a bunch of the emissions stuff and got it just about right. I get 27 to 28mpg as it sits. I've got the harley carb swap coming from petro works so I'm pulling it all and selling it when I'm done with the swap. I wanted more power, better throttle response, and more room under the hood.

I would be surprised if the fuel pump doesn't solve your problem but just in case, remain pessimistic so you're ready if it turns out that it still  doesn't solve your problem. ::) ::)

Adam,
Thanks for the info. I might be interested in that carb if the fuel pump doesn't fix my problem. I am saving my cash for a petroworks carb myself, but it might be around the first of the year before that happens. Let me know how your new carb works.

I'll keep everyone posted on the progress.

I just called petroworks and the carb won't ship until at least the end of next week.  (They could have called instead of leaving me hang.) I think it's been over 3 weeks now. They are behind because of the wild fires. I guess Gary is helping people evacuate or something. I'll be posting when I have it swapped so you can p.m. me if you are still  interested in the carb. I'm thinking I'll be putting it in the week before thanksgiving but It depends on my crappy work schedule and when petroworks ships the carb to me. I probably wouldn't have been able to install it for a couple of weeks anyways so no big deal.

Let us know if the fuel pump solves the problem.

my gawd man ... you do realize they are in the middle of a friggin DISASTER.

all this vendor bashin' makes me think how self centered people have become ...

Cripes do you even have a clue how YOUR inconvience of them not calling you compares to THEIR inconvience of evacuating the homes and business.

Well I put on the new fuel pump and a Buddy was in town to help with the lift and the carb issue. We installed the new carb and then got the "Dream Crusher" running!  ;D

I still have some adjusting to do. It seems like it has a flat spot, but overall it runs pretty good! With the 31's I now know that I will have to have some gears next. It takes alot of revin' to get it moving. I hope when I get the carb dialed in that will help some.

I will post some before and after pics later.

Thanks to everyone for all of the help!
