On the SJ it's a rather simple task to just pull the shifter off and fill up the Transmission that way. Is there a similarly simple way to pull the shifter off the Tracker transmission or transfer case to fill it up? Just wondering what all has to be pulled off in order to facilitate this.

I just changed the oil in mine last week and filled them both through the oil check plug.

You can pull of the shifter but you risk having junk drop down into your case. Using the fill hole and a 10$ suction gun from Harbor Freight is your best bet. Be sure to use synthic oil, it is what the manual says to use.

Ok, I was just looking for an easy alternative to buying the proper equipment.

What special equipment? Just stick the nipple from the bottle in the fill hole and squeeze.

After replacing all the oil in the SJ two or three times you get really tired of squeezing the bottle. :) So instead I bought a little electric oil pump on E-Bay for 20 bucks. ;D

what kind of oil is suposed to go in the tranny

I don't think you can fill the tracker tranny(manual) through the shifter mount. You see, an occasional problem that has come up in the past amongst numerous offroad driven trackers is that during water crossings, the shifter linkage part of the tranny can sometimes get water and mud in it, which freezes in cold temperatures leaving the tranny unable to shift until it warms up enough to melt. Apparently the linkages are in a seprate compartment from the actual tranny fluid/gear oil and this linkage compartment is the one accessed by pulling out the shifter. The only way to cure the freezing issue is to pull out the shifter and suck out as much water and muck as you can, then blast all the linkages down with wd-40 or something similar before putting the shifter back in...

It's not that hard to do yourself. Using a pump is much preferred over squeezing a bottle. I used 75W90 and my hands got tired really fast. Just make sure you don't strip out the stupid square-head plugs. Whoever had this truck before me rounded out the square quite nicely so I ended up having a bolt welded to the plug.

I usually put 75/90 is just about everything on the SJ. Accept the ARB, it gets Synthetic from the GM garage. Strangely, it is usually in old Chevron oil containers. Almost as if an inside source keeps filling them up from the oil barrels....

i put 75/90wt gearl oil in and it is really easy with an extra fuel line or vacume hose laying around just squeeze it on the end of the gear oil bottle and put the other end in the tranny.
