Alright so here I go. I bought an 87' Samurai for 500$ cash and it has a 1.3L in it, everything runs great.. My engine does leak oil out at the back somewhere onto my exhaust and transmission causing it to smoke when I'm not moving. I want to do an upgrade some how to make it so my sammy is more peppy and has more power and fix the smoking.. I can currently top out at about 75MPH downhill. Some people are telling me carb and header, but I have no idea where to start... such as where to find them ect... I would like to eventually lift it higher and add bigger tires. I bought a 2 inch shackle lift and now am looking for more pointers from everyone. I appreciate you taking your time to read this!!! thanks!!!!

First take back the shackle lift, there are much better ways to lift a sami. Second, Fix the oil leaks before you start anything else. Third, you need to find out what condition the engine is in, start with a compression check. Fourth, you have come to the right place There are people here with tons of experience, ask good questions and learn from them. But start using the search function! Most of what you want to learn has already been discussed many times already. Read what has already been written, then if you have questions ask. Welcome, 500 is a great price for a running Samurai.

Well, I can't take back the shackle lift got them from a buddy they were only 40$ and they are really strong, he bought them 4 months ago and didn't need them. I want to work on fixing the oil leaks, I guess one of my questions would be; what would the most likely spot be if it is leaking on the exhaust and transmission? Head Gasket? Also about the condition of my engine, I was told when i bought it that it had been rebuilt about 50,000 miles ago.. receipts too. Again she seems to run wonderful I just want to see if possible to get more power, fun, lift and bigger tires without having to do engine swap. Thanks!

a good place to look for the oil leak is the distributor. the o-ring goes and causes a bad leak. also the valve cover is another good place. as for smoking, check the vacomn T off the PCV valve. it gets plugged with carbon and makes it smoke. friend of mine rebuilt his motor and we later found this problem. rebuilt for nothing. good luck. nice find on the sammi

Welcome to our world of Samurais!
As ROSS mentioned, a leaky distributor O-ring can sling a lot of oil across the transmission and bottom of the truck.
For help on this problem, try a search for distributor at Ack's FAQ (the link is in my signature). There you will find two links to articles showing you how to deal with the problem.

Great find.
Mine leaked just about everywhere. I eliminated the leaks one by one. Distributor o-rings, fuel pump gasket, valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, rear main seal, transmission, transfer case...
Easy vehicle to work on and all the leaks were cheap to fix. The perfect vehicle to learn to work on because you will probably get to work on everything ;D ;D
Get some engine de-greaser so you can clean up after words so you can spot any other leaks if any.
