there is a great link in acks faqs about the rear bearing replacement. very well written and pictures to boot. The way they showed it, after removing the essentials (break lines, bolts, etc.) they remounted the tire and kicked the backside and the axle just popped right out. Im still trying to figure out if I have a problem with a rear bearing or if its something else....

Under caution is the old fashioned way.
Go loosen up the nuts on the bolts that hold the bearing retainer to the rear axle and go drive a few circles around the block. As you do your laps around the block with the loose bolts in back, the bearing should loosen up from the housing.
Only do this if you are going to pull it apart right after your trips around the block, other wise your wheel and axle may part company with you and the axle housing just when you may need them the most.
Like at a crosswalk just around a corner. Kinda hard too stop when your brakes no longer work and one side of your rig is digging into the pavement spinning you who knows where.
And again, only do this the day( the hour before) you pull the axle apart, do not have the nut's/bolt's loose for a week.

Thank you for those kind words...
...However - the actual rear axle teardown page is at izook.com:
http://www.izook.com/tech/samurai/drivetrain/rearaxlebrg.htm (http://www.izook.com/tech/samurai/drivetrain/rearaxlebrg.htm)
It turns up with several other similar pages including this one at ZukiKrawlers.com
http://www.zukikrawlers.com/showthread.php?t=2905 (http://www.zukikrawlers.com/showthread.php?t=2905)
when you do a search for rear axle at Ack's FAQ.
Hope that this helps!

Thanks for the info guys, it's sooo nice to come in out of the garage for the night and drop a question on;ine and have several answers before I head back out to the garage the next day. ;)

You can also get an adapter kit that allows you to remove the axle without disconnecting the brake hydraulics. Hawk and a few other vendors sell it for around $12.00. Handy if you plan on keeping your zuk long enough to have to change another bearing or you bust an axle. I used a 5 pound slide hammer from harbor freight myself. It took 30 or 40 good yanks I think.

You can also switch to disk brakes in the rear when you use the SJ-410 backing plates. Makes things easier all around. :)

The TT disk brake kit I have does not use backing plates but retain the rear bearing with the caliper mount instead. Better way to go in the long run as you have way better brakes in the rear as well as an easy way to remove the rear axle shaft.

Ah, I just did my own home-made rear disk conversion. Is the TT disk brake kit the one with the Subaru calipers?

I used the economy rear disk kit that uses the Suzuki parts, they do have another rear disk kit that does use the Subaru parts.

I didn't realize their caliper mount was used to hold the bearing in. Did you have to press it onto the axle or does it just slip over a backing place?
