Hello everyone, as you can see I am quite new and I have a pretty important question. Today, of all days, I went out to start my '88 Sammi and while I was warming it up i heard an almost popping noise from the front end. It immediately turned off and will not start now. I checked all the fuses hoping it would be that easy but none of them were blown. I was thinking it was something with the fuel pump because it sounded like it was turning over fine. When I sprayed some starter fluid in it didn't start either so now I don't know even know if i'm getting a spark. All the plug wires are on well so I wanted to see if anyone had some insight before I take it to a shop here in Fort Collins tomorrow.
thanks,
Chris

Well if it's the stock engine, it should have a mechanical fuel pump, so as long as the hoses are connected and it's not leaking, it should be alright. The fact that you say it wont run on ether either means to me that you might have a bad ignition coil. My guess is no spark. Can you smell fuel at all around the carb?

i should have known it was a mechanical fuel pump...sorry brand new.
Would the ignition coil going out cause a "pop" noise?
There wasn't an overly strong fuel odor around the carb that I noticed. What would that indicate? Too much fuel pressure to spark?
thanks!!

Pop the distributor cap off and crank the engine. If the rotor is not turning the the timing belt broke. Thats what it sounds like anyways.
Or just take the top and side nuts off of the timing cover and pull it back a little bit. You will be able to see if the timing belt is still on the pulley or not.

good call, I'll run out and try it.
I just read this other thread about ignition coils:

I ran a new ground for the coil and that didn't change anything.
I did, however, smell gasoline around the carb if that means anything.
thanks for the help guys...off to check the timing chain

rotor is not turning!! >:(
sounds like a broken timing belt then...guess i'll go take a peek at it

No spark issue. Reason you smelled fuel cuz it wasn't burnt. Timing belt could be broke.

Thanks fellas, just popped the timing cover a bit and peeked in and the belt was right there on the sprocket with about 1/4" of the sprocket showing towars the rear of the vehicle...but the rotor in the distributer still isn't turning ...
any thoughts?

Broken rotor, broken distributor shaft, broken timing belt that's still on the pulley... I asked about the smell of fuel to establish that fuel was getting to the carb, which it sounds like it is.

The fuel pump is driven off the cam so if there is fuel to the carb then the cam must be turning. That leaves the drive to the distributor. A short while back a guy in the UK had a problem with the drive gear on the cam moving, its only pressed in place. Time to pull the dizzy and investigate.

turns out there weren't any teeth left on the timing belt so that's why I could still see it when I just popped the top off of it.
thanks for everything guys

Well that would do it.

Pretty much the last thing I'd have thought of.

yeah it caught me just because the belt looked fine at a glance
