Anyone going to LBL or Harlan ? Boober85 and I are going to get laid off within the next few weeks. We will be trying to get a small group together to go wheel'n .Last year we met up with LILRED and her group and had a BLAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!at LBL.Looking to do the same this year when we have the time off.LILRED set up an AWESOME trip last year.We haven't been to Harlan yet,And it looks like a 9hr ride for us but its doable. So anyone interested????? ??? ???(LILRED)????????????
-
I love LBL.I have lived my life a few minutes away, and have allways spent a lot of time there. There are usually a few of us local Zuki nuts playing out there,so you should have company.I still have accomplished next to nothing on my Sidekick due to another surgery or I would be in!
-
I will keep up on this post .I 'm sure that it will be sometime in Jan.that we will be shooting for,Stiill don't know where yet.
-
I'm up for wheeling with ya'll anytime!!! Only its doubtful we could make a trip to Harlan this time of year. Our group will have our annual January wheeling trip but we haven't decided any details yet. Usually its the third weekend in January and most likely it will be at LBL if they want to ride on Friday. I'll work on getting a plan outta that group and see if we can't all meet up!! Keep us posted on how things are shaping up for ya'll. Sorry to hear of your layoff but looking forward to wheeling' with ya again!!
-
LBL would be fine for us.Booger85 and I get laid off every year around this time he's on S&W crew and I'm in dirt work .That just meens we get a little more wheel'n time for a few months.I'ts actually suppose to snow for Thanksgiving!!!!!! Hope you guys have agood Turkey Day.

I Wheeled with LilRed and The "group" at the last Harlan Fall Crawl, and had a great time. Where is LBL? ( for us northern types.) If it's late Jan maybe Rita and I can swing another long weekend, would love to visit the area again, this time with 4 2 1 Low range gears!
-
LBL is in western Kentucky,in Marshal county.About 40 minutes away from Paducah, and about 30 minutes from Murray. The far side of Land betwen the Lakes crosses into Tenn.the off road area is called Turkey Bay .
There is a pretty good web site with all the info and such, and I think it is lbl.com But don't hold me to that.

YEAH! That would be awesome!! You would enjoy Booger85 and Zukinator-Zs nice rigs as well if we could all get together!!! You could definitely use those gears at LBL, but its nothing like Harlan. Lots of steep climbs, just not mountains!! Pretty rocky place, but about the only ones bigger than a basketball are the one's packed in for the manmade rock gardens. Lots of good trails though! Even some of the backroads through the Land Between The Lakes area can be fun and open to you since you're street legal!!! One downfall, they close the park if they get lots of rain due to the increased erosion, so its always risky planning a trip there. However, it was pretty wet last year and they didn't close it possibly cause they're are so few rigs there that time of year anyway. Seems like we nearly had the place to ourselves last year! Here's a link to the OHV site : http://www.lbl.org/OHVTrails.html Either way, our group will ride somewhere on the planned weekend in January as its tradition, even if we have to go south to TN. We let a couple of the other guys decide where we go on this one. I suspect they will choose Turkey Bay or possibly Wheelin' In The Country in Summertown TN but I hear its getting pretty extreme there. So I can't commit yet to more than that for that trip but all of ya'll are welcome to ride with us whereever and whenever!!! Zukinator-Z, this is your trip so plan what you need to. That being said, at some point, you will want to make a trip to Harlan. I think you would find it worth the drive but Bentparts could better answer that than I!!! I'm expecting we'll go over there again this spring or summer (hint hint)! Maybe make the Fall Crawl an annual trip as well!!
-
I smell a return trip to the land of southern hospitality! :)
-
It probably will end up being the 3rd weekend in Jan . Wheel fri sat sun possibly? I don't know what our trailer situation is at the moment.Booger85's boy Brandon built a Sammi this summer so we are looking for a 2 placer for them.Would that work out with you groups plan?
-
200 tons of boulders were donated to Turkey Bay a couple of weeks ago to add to the rock garden!!!
-
That is awesome !!!!!!!! Does the 17th thru 20th sound right ? wheel on the 18 ,19thand half day 20th?

I've just been informed my wife and kids will be going !!!!! ;D ;D ;D.So this will be the dates we will be wheelin Jan19 and 20th,Sat and Sun.We will be leaving on fri around noon(my kids have ahalf day of school)and driving home on mon(kids have off)That way are kids aren't missing any school.Lilred hope this works for you guys .We will be able to at least wheel with ya'll on Sat.It looks like Booger85,slowmo(Jeff)and possibly Tanker(my dad in his rhino)will be going as of now.
-
Zukinator-Z, that is great news that the wife and kids are going to be with you! Ariel was so cool and fun last year! I expect we will be over early on Friday morning and ride Friday and Saturday at least. Some of us maybe Sunday too. I'm not sure yet who is wheeling' what this year except that I will be in my Sidekick. Duane is preparing for a toyota axle swap into his Sami so he may bring the Exploder and Jerry is thinking about bringing his Pathfinder instead of his Sami. We're helping Cecil swap bodies on his blazer this weekend. I expect Shawn will bring his Rhino and Grease in his CJ again. Where are ya'll staying? We've been tossing around the idea of staying in a motel instead of camping this year, especially if the weather is bad!
-
Hey LilRed, sounds like the boys want to wheel somthing with heat and windows this time! So far it looks good for me and Rita to make it. Do you have any tips on motels and such? And Duane, what happened, couldn't fit them Rockwells under the Sammie?

Oh there will still be a few of them without doors and windows! I've never seen the CJ with a top on it, rain or snow. But I'm sure our cold & snow doesn't compare to what you're used to! So glad ya'll are going to make it! We have always camped on this annual trip so I'm not real up to speed on the motels. I know you can get a motel in Aurora for around $45 / night, almost as luxurious as the Mt Aire was in Harlan! There are a couple of state lodges nearby (Lake Barkley Lodge or KenLake Lodge) with rooms around $60 per night. I'm thinking Zukinator Z's group stayed at one of those last year.??
-
We could camp if necessary, got the camper finished. Is it a campground, state forest or ?? Showers?

We've been staying at Wrangler's Campground, just a short drive from Turkey Bay. Some of us in the "cabins" they have. Very basic one room with bunk & electric but we have to bring our own heaters. Still beats having to worry about the tent collapsing from the snow! And they have nice (very warm) bath houses. Full hookup & primitive sites available as well. More than likely that is where we will end up as usual.
Duane said to be sure I let you know that there's always the possiblility that Turkey Bay will close that weekend if we get lots of rain. Erosion control measures. If they do, we will probably just run the backroads with the street legal rigs . . . and get VERY muddy!!
-
Us KY wheelers plan is indeed to stay at Wrangler's Campground again this year. We will be arriving early Friday morning the 18th to set up camp and cut firewood. We'll wheel that afternoon, all day Saturday and maybe some of us on Sunday.
-
:'( Rita Can't make it that weekend, some kind of work function She must attend. I'm not sure if I'll be coming down now, I'll keep an eye on the weather.
-
We are going to stay at the Lakeland motel. At least we can wheel with you on sat, all day and part day sun .That will be awesome!!!!!!!!!

Shucks. Hope you can make it anyway, but I understand if you can't. I know that's a long drive with no one to talk to, especially for you!!  jk, Anytime you can make it down, we can go wheelin'!!
Zukinator-Z, come by Wrangler's and visit if ya'll get in town (can ya call it that?) on Friday evening!
-
We won't be down until late fri night. We will try and be at the park at 8:00am.Do you know if there going to be open or what the wheather is going to be? around here it's crazy.Snow and bitter cold then it warmed up to the 60" and thunderstorms and tornado"s with flooding, now they are saying snow and cold for the weekend!!!!!!

We've had the same crazy weather only 10 degrees warmer and no snow!! I saw pics from last weekend at Turkey Bay and it looked pretty messy! We're likely to get rain a couple more times before our trip. But although they can close at any time, I think they are less likely to do so this time of year since there aren't many of us fools out there. If it looks like there is a chance, I will contact the one of the rangers and let them know ya'll are coming down and how dissappointing it would be. Can't hurt to let them know! I'll PM ya our cell phone #s before. Let me know what CB channel you will be on. We usually start out on 37.
Uh oh. They've closed from all the rain we got yesterday already. Here's a link to the website with closing info:

Lilred,we are planning to come down there if they are open .If they are closed we are going to go to harlan. The web site says they are going to essess the trails on thu.and then we will call fri morn also.Bogger 85 is trailering his kicker with a cherokee and doesn't really want to drive another hour and a half if he doesn't have to.If they are open we can be on ch.37 and I will call Duanes cell :)I would think they will open on fri like last year, hopefully!!!!!!!
-
We are heading over late tomorrow morning. Hope Turkey Bay is open but if not, we'll be on the backroads over the weekend, leaving out of Wrangler's Campground, channel 37 if ya'll decide to stay, or anyone else wants to join us. Bentparts gets impulsvie again he's liable to show up after all or follow ya'll to Harlan!! Be safe.
-
Damn, and I finally put mudflaps on my pile! This weekend is a washout ( no pun intended) for me and the wife, just too much going on. Hopefully we can come down in the Spring, or maybe sooner. Have fun, and don't break any axles Duane!
-
Looks like we are going to flatnasty in missouri. It will be less miles and we know for sure they are open.We will have to try and get down sometime and wheel with ya'll again .We will try and take a bunch of pics to post.
-
I don't think they ever opened Turkey Bay. We had a great time wheelin' the backroads. Mostly just scenic trailriding with a few muddy spots for fun. Its gonna be a pain cleanin' em up though!
Here's me pullin' out D's stock Explorer. The auto hub came and when on its on on that thing the first day.

I had to work hard at it, but finally got the Kick stuck.

I might wait til the spring thaw to wash this mud off . . .
