HI all, i finally got my 1.6 8v into the engine bay of my samurai and something just isn't fitting right. I bought the swap kit from Rocky Road and followed all the directions with the offset brackets and all other directions, but for some reason the motor mounts just aren't matching up with the original holes on my body. Also, it looks like I'm going to have a def clearance problem with the hood closing. Any ideas or suggestions?? ??? ???

I am not familiar with the Rocky Road mounting kit other than it has been around for a while and probably works correctly.
I would step away from the project for a couple of hours and think about something else. Once you have cleared your mind of the problem, go back and study the instructions and try it again. Better yet, have someone else take a look at it (we posters are great for advice but rotten when it comes to actually being there :D )
It is possible that you have a defective kit... but I wouldn't call Rock Road until you are sure of it.
If your truck's suspension is stock, then you will have a clearance problem with the hood and the oilpan and front axle.
Been there, done that, have the 1.6 8-v Samurai to show for it.

well i have a 6" lift so i think that should take away the clearance problem with the oil pan. its the motor mounts that are my biggest concern right now. the whole hood issue can be fixed by getting creative but i was just seeing what others that had done the swap would think about this problem. has anyone else come across the problem of the motor mounts not lining up right? how did you solve these problems?
Thanks for your input guys!

mines a calmini kit. the're preety much all the same. take your time and make sure every bracket is in the right place.you can call them for tech advice .

did your radiator and everything fit in right? cause mine looks like the fan and radiator setup as it was stock is not gunna come close to fitting...i reviewed all my steps and i just cant seem to figure out what the hell is wrong with it. the motor mounts just arent lining up.
-
I think that there are two different cast steel mounts that bolt up to the engine, maybe the 1.3 and two different 1.6 mounts but not sure which one you should use, I have the petroworks kit.
-
i have the rocky road one and it gave me the offset motor mount adapter but something just isnt fitting as easy as it should... im at a standstill with this project..its depressing haha
-
what did the 1.6 come out of
-
came out of an 89 sidekick. its efi too
-
You need to take the castings off the 1.3 all the way to the block and put them on the 1.6 they diffrent
-
this may be stupid, but what are the castings? they the mount that goes from the block to the actual motor mount?
-
Yes from motor mount to motor I have done this they are not same. There is three bolts on the block. Put the 1.3 on
-
okay i guess ill go to the junk yard and get this. you would think that Rocky Road would have thought of this instead of giving me a completely new casting... not too impressed with that company all together actually. didnt ship some of my parts to begin with.
-
The 1.6 8v motor is a little taller than the 1.3, so you would have to either cut the hood or use a slight body lift.

I may be wrong about this.....
...but I believe that the 1.6 engine was not available on the '89 model.
Take a look at the engine block on the driver's side next at the transmission end. if the stamping reads G13 or 1296cc, you have a 1.3 engine which would explain why the mounts don't fit.
Hey, if it IS a 1.3, you won't have any problems installing it as a replacemnt! Just use the old manifold, exhaust, starter, alternator, etc...

The 1.6 was available in 89 however there was a 1.3 option also. If the engine is FI then it is a 1.6 if it has a carb it is a 1.3
-
okay so still assuming that i do have the 1.6... any suggestions as to what i did wrong for the motor mounts not to line up?
-
Are you sure you have the offset on the right side? Right as in correct, not right side of the motor
-
ya i checked it twice. the directions call for the offset mount to be put on the passenger side of the motor and that is where it is.
-
so the update is that i finally got the motor mounted to the mounts and all but there is still no chance the hood will close. any ideas? i was thinking i may have to make a cowl induction style hood to compensate for the intake for the efi. what ya'll think?
-
when trail ough installed he motor in my sammy they put a 1" body lift under the front 4 body mounts

Adding a aftermarket scoop would not be very difficult or expensive, but most people install a body lift to overcome the clearance problem.Especially since it gives more tire clearance and gets the rockers up further from danger.
-
I have the same problem with my SJ413, I am going to fit a hood scoop. I don't need the extra tyre clearance and I don't want to raise the C of G just to close the hood.
-
ya same here.. i really dont want to do a body lift. and plus, i think the hood scoop will look a lot better!!
