Anybody else have trouble getting out your rear third member on a Sidekick axle?
I have beat the crap out of this thing and barely have a crack at the seal.
I have never had to beat a third this hard to get it out.
Any suggestions?

If the axle is pulled from the vehicle then the only way I have been able to get it is to turn the axle so that the third member is pointing down. Get a brass punch and a hammer and hit the back of the flange rotating it around. Make sure there is something to catch the third.
If its still in the vehicle then make sure all the bolts are off including the 4 bolts on the top of the third member. Then some have been able to put a jack under the flange and crank it up.
They are a bugger. Thats why most of them at the junkyard never get pulled.

If you have air, use an air chisel as it will make the job a lot less frustrating. The goop used to seal the third to the rear housing is some bad ass stuff. The air makes the hammer/chisel work a piece of cake. Also remember to keep a couple three bolts holding the third too the housing in, keep an eighth of an inch or so clearance from the bolt head to the thirdmember. This will keep the third from taking off when you do finally break it free.
And please do not beat on the flange, not a good idea.

I've always put a jack right up by the pinion (the flat side of the 3rd) and given it some slight tension (jacked it up), then hit it with a hammer, and it will come loose.
Needless to say, the original gasket sealer was some amazing stuff.

Your beating and my beating may have different meanings. I'm not talking about a 5lb sledge. Never had a problem with it.

Beating, smacking , thumping, whacking, it's all the same.
A 5lb. hammer might just get it done but if you go that route, a 25lb hammer can do the same damage but faster. And an 8 oz hammer with enough uuumpgh behind it will do the same damage that the 25lb hammer would do.
I guess it is all in how you see things. :-\

Please make sure both right and left axle shafts are pulled out. Then with a 1' or 1 1/2" scraper or putty knife with a stiff blade tap it between the 3rd and the housing. That will make *just* enough space to get a proper pry bar in there, then work your way around. This is what I do when I don't have air power, which is so often the case at the wrecking yards where I hang out and play in my free time (when I'm not wheelin'). I suppose screwdrivers would work but there really is no replacement for a proper pry bar. I just pulled some 3rds today at the j/y so this is fresh in my mind. Good Luck!

This works for me whenever i take a Samurai axle apart. You end up slowly applying the weight of the vehicle to pop the third loose.
As goodyz mentioned, nothing will happen until you are able to slide the axle shafts out of the differential case enough to clear the side gears and the third member.

I did this to a sammi that had never had the 3rds out...Holy cow! I got both the back wheels off the ground. Just had to set it down, give it a couple boots on the side of the 3rd. jacked it back up again and it poped right out
