Title: Tire sizes and consequences .
Post by: BIG DOG on December 01, 2007, 01:15:16 PM
I have a stock 95 tracker 16v 5 spd .I may lift it body and suspension to 5"-6"  and bigger tires. What effect will the bigger tire sizes have on my power, gas mileage, highway driving ,handling ...? I will be putting on off set rims and either 30",31"or 32" BF Goodrich Mud terrains .Mostly using it to go back and forth to work 30 miles mostly through town with about  5 miles on the highway. Then for playing around some with .Not worried about the playing around just the normal driving.
Any input or advise will be appreciated ....new to the tracker !
Thanks!

power, will decline with larger tires, it will still be drivable, lower R&P's will help.

gas mileage, will decline not by much as long as the engine is well maintained

highway driving, See power, depending on how big a tire and R&P's you may loose 5th on the hwy.

handling, I like how my truck handles. Sidekicks are not now nor will they ever be rally cars. when you lift it loose the sway bar, you won't miss it.

I won't be doing the R&P anytime soon I have been thinking 31's  they seem to look ok with a 5"- 6" lift.

You'll notice the difference in acceleration immediatly. Sluggish is the word that comes to mind.

I know removal of the sway bar will give more flex. I have been nervous about removing mine, I think I read somewhere it can create a situation for breakage on one side, either the drivers or pass. side I cant remember. Is this true? Help freshen my memory.  :-\

bentparts How slugish is yours with the 5:13 gears and 31's.I have to put tires on it and I want the best of evrything but I know the power will suffer .What will the gas mileage go to? I get about 30 now are we talking 26 or are we talking down to 18?

I have an auto tracker with 5.13s and 33"s. It is pretty sluggish. won't be claiming any speed record. Not to bad around town. Really have to work it on the highway. As for offroad. Pretty good for climbing and stuff but completely gutless in the mud. But a stick would prob be a bit better. Also the t case gear kits work wonders

Mine origanally had the 4.30 gears in it. In that mode with 31's it was a dog bigtime. Milage went down significantly, 20ish. Switching to the 5.13's made a BIG difference, adding the turbo another BIG difference. Plenty o power and acceleration. Now that the turbo is out, I'm back to mildly tuned, and it's acceptable but could still use more power. I'm redesigning and building a new turbo setup, simpler and cleaner. Do some gears, you'll be happier.

I still get 29/30mpg clocked with the odometer, and I use 5th gear all the time, hills - no. I have to down shift, but no big deal. I still have great pick up, not like stock, but I can keep up with a cavalier  ::)

Uncivilized what's your tire size and setup.
31-10.5-15 on 15x7 steel wheels 15psi
95 16 valve w/ coil spacer 2" lift

My fuel usage is on test all the time, my gauge doesn't work so I rely on kilometers and litres. It's very consistant, but this time of year I'm burning more since I'm idling about 20 minutes extra each day for warmup.(might sound like a lot, but it was -24c this morning  :'()

I have a 4 door 5 speed 16 valve Sidekick with 30x9.5's on 15x8 rims with the stock 5.12 diff gears and stock t-case gears. It's not horrible to drive around town or on the freeway. You will need to drop down into 4th or in some cases 3rd for those steep mountain passes. Off road it's best described as adequate. Expect to ride the clutch a bit more too in rugged terrain. I'm not entirely satisfied with this setup because I thought that going up to 30's instead of 31's or 32's I wouldn't need to regear. Well, I don't NEED to but it's not as enjoyable on tough trails. I can see myself shelling out some dough for a 4.24:1 transfer case gearset in the future along with some 31 or 32" tires.
