Title: 4X4 light blinks when in gear
Post by: wuggie on October 23, 2004, 11:16:20 PM
Have an "03 Tracker, 2-dr, auto.  The dealer just finished replacing a seal in the case and now  when I put the transfer case in 4wd, low or high, the light on the dash panel keeps blinking.  The 4wd works no problem.  what could be causing this blinking, I'm taking it back to dealer and would like to have an idea what could be causing it in the event he tries to give me some BS!!!
Thanks

They probably didn't plug in the wire
all the way that turns on the light

Could be a couple of things, but I had the same problem with the blinking. I've found the rubber line feeding air pressure to the diff was leaking and the air pump would run on and on, then break off. Once computer determined it's necessary again, the pump would run again. I just replaced the rubber line with a fuel rubber line. Fuel line is better rubber, much thicker, and is reinforced.

Check the small rubber line feeding from the frame to under the front diff. Take some soapy water and apply it to the rubber line to locate the air leak.
Place the vehicle in park, key in run position, motor off. Pull the rubber line off the steel line on the frame and plug that with your finger. You should feel the air pressure from the pump. You should also here the pump running. Someone else will let you know if the blinker stopped. If it did, this is a strong indicator that is the problem. If not, check the other rubber lines to the pump. The funny thing is the pump is located above the bumper, behind the grille. The line is rubber, then steel, rubber insulated. It runs out to top of radiator, along the inner wheelwell, then back down to the frame crossmember, to the diff.  A way long way to get to the diff.
I think I have a few pics in the webshots. Not much of a picture, but http://community.webshots.com/photo/107940331/107941409HmLYNt

Just got it back from the dealer after 4 days, the light still blinks when in 4wd.  they checked the 2 electrical connections to the transfer case, replaced the computer and checked and re-checked the electrical.  It shows nothing wrong but it still blinks. The 4wd works in hi and lo range

They contacted technical support and they had no record of this situation.  Their stumped with no answers.
It's just annoying seeing the light blinking every 3 seconds.

Any ideas?

I sent you a PM, but also look at the pressure the pump generates. The pump and pressure vavle are one and this may lead to the blinking light. The valve is a ground once pressure reaches the proper pressure. If not, the compressor has a timer on it to make it stop running after so many seconds (10 or so IIRC).
Give it a test by taking the feeder line to the diff off. Use your finger to feel the air flow. With engine off, key in start mode, t-case in 4wd, take finger on/off the end of the hose. You should hear the pump cutoff due to pressure build-up by your finger.
Was this vehicle involved in a frontal accident? I'm also thinking of a short.

It was involved in a frontal accident mostly minor but after it was repaired and I used the 4wd the light didn't blink.
Any suggestions?
Thanks Again

Along the lines of the accident, I was thinking of a wire either pinch to ground or broken (might not see it).

Since they replaced a seal in the t-case, I'd go look back at the connections of the wiring around that area. They may have disconnected something and didn't get it to seat correctly.
Pull the + lead to the battery and let sit for 1hour (maybe???) to have the computer reset and while it's disconnected, check the connectors. If you can tell that one has been separated, separate it and see of the pins are straight. Mating a connector underneath can be difficult and pins can be bent.

Have you taken it to another dealership? This may help as other mechanics can get a hold of it and analyze it from a different standpoint.

They said the re-checked everything and replaced the computer.  There was no read out as to why the light was blinking.
You stated that the pump actuates the 4wd, I assumed w/the 4wd shifter that the 4wd engaged manually due to the lever being placed in 4wd etc.
The 4wd works when engaged.  What would the pump have to do with the blinking light, air pressure etc, if the light is electric?
I sent you a PM yesterday with my location.
I did notice yesterday that on 1 of the lines which I think is connected to the pump the clamp wasn't on it, could that be it?

I sent a reply, but alas, sent to Wildgoody. He informed me and I just sent back the message, hopefully, to you.
I don't understand you last sentence. The pump is hard to find as it's located under the grille above the bumper in front of the fan/radiator. I'll shoot some pics tomorrow of mine.
There is a PCM which controls every and all things in your vehicle. There are some self-tests you could perform on several pins of the PCM. This could tell you something regarding the flashing light.
