Title: 12 Volt ignition coil

Hello,
I have a buddy in need of a new coil for his 1983 Nissan pickup. I seem to remember from my VW days that a coil is a coil and as long as it's 12 volts it will work..... Is this true?  Napa wants 50 bucks for one which seems a little steep.

Any information on this would be very much appreciated.

some coils need a resistor or (i may be dateing myself) a "resistor wire".
i don't know |removethispart|@ a nissan.
