Title: Need toyota axle suggestions
Post by: ace69247no13 on December 29, 2007, 01:16:33 PM
In the spring i plan to install the full coil spring suspension from rocky road on my 87 tin top sammy. the install will include 33 11.50 15 super swamper thornbirds and toyota axles. the next step after the install will be the 6:1 tcase gears from rocky road. what i would like more info on is the axles, I know that for 33" tires the stock sammy axles aren't enough. i was wondering what year i should get the axles from. any help on this is apreciated, as well as any help with building an exo skeleton for it.

Actually, I run 33" tires on Sammy axles without to much of a hassle.  Plus you can get Newfield front axles that will swap in and supposedly allow you to run 35" tires without a problem.  I haven't tried them yet, so I can't tell you from experience.

You will need a front axle from an 85 or older Toyota, as in 86 they swapped to IFS.  Unless you are in the rest of the world, where you got them until the mid 90's.  Most people use post 85 rear axles as they are an inch wider and have some other items that are better that escape me at the moment.

As for tubbing it out, take a look at the Members Rides at the top.  Also, Trail Tough has some pictures of their new buggy setup on their site.  Looks pretty nice.  :)

well since i am a mechanic and with the suspension i plan to run i would need a 2.5" backspace wheel. this would put alot of strain on the stock axles. i also feel its better to change to something better before breaking something on a trail. also in case i decide to up to a 35" tire in the future. i have read alot about how the stock sammy axles can take a 31" no problem, which is actually what i am running now, yet i have heard of people seeing trouble when going to a 33". so the sky toy rear is my plan for that just wanted to get any input on ratios and what to look for or any ideas from someone who has done the swap?

Do you have any pics of how and where you chopped the toyota frame and how you welded it to the tracker frame?

I also would think you can solve your gearing problems, if you add a toyota motor, trans, and transfercase.

I plan on running yota axles also. 84-85 years are the stoutests, they have alot of extra gusseting from the factory. I would run at least 35's on em. And fer gawds sake, don't get thornturds!!

I think an exo should be minimalistic. Build a stinger, run a bar from about the height the headlights back to a bar going up and over the top of the windshield, and a bar going over the cowl. Bar over the B pillar, and connect the 2. Make the back simple too keep the weight down. Build some stout sliders to run the exo off of also.

Post pics!

If your going to run 6 to 1's I would try the stock 4.10 gears first and see how you like them, if you do then pull them and put lockers in them or what ever.
