im sure all you guys are gona shoot me for even asking but ive had a turbo offered to me along with anything else id need off of the vehicle. i was woundering if it would be worth it to even try. we had a turbo chrysler minivan come in today and i made a coment about wanting a turbo for my zuk and one was offered to me free of charge.
i guess they are tough built units. very rarely do they ever see one with issues. would it be worth it to even try? i was told it only puts out 5 lbs of boost tops. its small enough i could mount it at the end of the header and plumb it from there to an innercooler. and use a small transmission cooler as an oil cooler possably before, and after the turbo. this would be after a total engine rebuild of course.
the minivan doesnt even come equiped with an innercooler. i was just going to add it in to chill the air for better performance. i have one from a cummins turbo that just needs mended. on one end it has a pin hole that hissed. but the thing is freakin huge. im wondering how tuff it would be to cut it down. id have to mount it on a roofrack if i diddnt. i guess that wouldnt be a bad place for it. any ideas?

Grab it up, I had given thought to adding a turbo years ago to the 1.3 in my Sammy. And that Ram intercooler is bigger than the front end of your rig. ;D
Go lurk around the wrecking yards and find one off of an import, going to be smaller.
-
i was thinking the innercooler would be over kill. but dont you thing bolting a chrysler (performance) part to a zuk is kind of an insult? i may work for them, but i dont support them. they support me with all the work though. P.S. never buy an intrepid, cherokee, liberty or a durango. very bad investment.

Bite your tongue man. :o I own an 06 QC DRW 4x4 Laramie, and yes it has a Cummins in it.
That big intercooler will add so much turbo lag filling it that your rig will probably not rev enough to be able too drive it, along with the location you are thinking of putting the turbo.
And yes I did own a 04 Cherokee grand limated, or what ever the thing is called. I also had a wife at the same time. It went with her. Both were a bad investment. >:D
Check out the sig. ;)

How big is the motor you're plucking the turbo from? Also You should mount the turbo high, especialy above the oil level in the oil pan or it won't drain right. So you will probably plan on fabbing new headers. You can run an oil cooler but never after the turbo. Sounds like a great project and something I want to hear the out come of. You have some homework ahead of you but but it sounds way cool. 5psi is about 30% more power. You will also pick up more mid and low range because boost is based on engine load. Plan on spending money in a few places, fuel pump, injectors, computor etc.

that was why i thought of cutting the innercooler down. i figured the mass of it was too much for the little turbo.i would never talk any smack about a cummins engine. if it wasnt for cummins chrysler wouldnt be crap. its their cars i dont like. their trucks may be nice looking but im not impressed with the quality. if i remember right they built their trucks around the cummins. well the frame atleist. i know things wear out but come on. their front ends are weak. were already replacing upper and lower ball joints on the 07s. the front drive shafts on the libertys, durangos and cherokees are blowing the cv style u-joints left and right and it calls for an entire driveline. their hemis werent proprely thought through either. they may have been built for high rpms but thats until a rocker arm pops out from under the cam.
any way,i think the engine im getting the turbo from is smaller than the 2.0 i saw in the shop. im not quite sure exactly what size it is. i do know that its the same turbo from the 2.0 though.
it looks like i found myself a rolled/smashed sidekick also so this is getting closer and closer to happening. popped the hood and everything is in perfect condition. only the rear of the kick i smashed in. they want 100 for the entire vehicle. i think its wourth it. im guessing thats almost everything ill need for the engine swap.
i own an 87 and the engine is still the stock 1.3.it looks pretty cut and dry as far as the swap goes. i want to build a solid engine out of the 1.6 before bolting it in though. im wanting to totaly rebuild it with all the mods and performance parts it can accept. plus id like to bore it 20 over if not more. i want it to last so is there anything i should/should not modify that could reduce the life of the engine drasticaly. what about sleeving it and running hardened pistons? im sure it may be overkill but im the kind of guy who can dissapear for an entire week and go cross country making my own roads. i seriously need it to last. plus im signing up fo surch and rescue this summer as a volunteer so i may need my own wheels to be of any use to them. so any ideas are welcome.
as far as keeping you posted on the project that will be no problem. i have to warn you that it could be a long haul before you see any serious action though. im doing this on poor white boy money that i shoulnt spend.

Dicedaniels the person to talk to about turbos is bentparts. He has a turbo on his that he did himself i am pretty sure. And but the pics it looks good. I'm sure he could give you some info towards it.
-
sweet thanx. i know very little about turbos except for basics so it would be good to talk to someone who does.

another person is wildgoody

Your going to want to build a stronger exhaust manifold to begin with. A stock header made from mild steel tubing will not be strong enough to carry the weight of a turbo. The thin wall tubes of a header won't stand up to the increased heat very long either. You will also need to increase fueling to match the turbo's needs. 5lbs boost would require bigger injectors at least in a 16v engine, with the 8 valve, something like a mega squirt injection controller and a larger injector is needed. Wild would know on that one. It may look simple at first, but there are a myraid of issues that need to be overcome to build a reliable long lasting setup. Your on the right track though, starting with a fresh engine. You'll have to consider things like engine compartment heat buildup, venting, charge air bypass is it's an auto, blow off valve if it's a manual, lots of stuff to think about. Check out www.flickr.com/photos/bentparts. Wildgoody has a turbo build as well, search here on this forum for more. Also a great book on building turbo's is Corky Bell's Maximum Boost. Good Luck and Happy Building! Look forward to seeing you rig when it's rolling.

thanx alot. im looking forward to showing it off when its built. since i work at a jeep dealer i have alot riding on this little build. i wish i had the cash to get it done fast. it looks like i have compitition there at the shop. a coworker has an older wrangler hes betting will beat out my zuk. right now mine is riding on 31" mudders with just a shackle lift, beat in pinch welds and a choped front bumper for clearance. im slowly aquiring the parts for a springover. my income tax is gona be primarily spent on getting it fixed up. i have a feeling hes in for a world of hurt once its up off of the tires.
im thinking about the 4.16 gears for the t-case since its going to be a driver. im wanting air lockers for both the front and rear but i see the price and cringe. 5" spoa with ott steering, a reverse shacle setup, K.A.D. driveshafts for both front and rear. building my own t-case mount and belly plate. axle trusses from sky for both top and botom both axles, and a bunch of little crap like the greatly appreciated aluminum door handles i need so much.

http://www.suzisport.com/ seemed to have the high end ported heads and sleaves and other high buck go fast goodies a few years back. If your in a race to flex you machismo against a guy whose been doing it for a few years you're headed for a black eye. Find the info of the vehicle it came from and start there, good luck.
