Title: Weird. Check engine light Flashing
Post by: olija on January 13, 2008, 06:52:38 PM
I was 4x4ing today and my check engine light had already been on for some time due to a faulty O2 sensor. However, the light started flashing. Everything seemed to be running fine, it wasn't overheating or anything. Any suggestions?

First thing i'd do is check codes...

Then if nothing out of the ordinary shows...

i would start to assume electircal problems of some sort...

sometimes my idiot light flashes too....ive read the codes and mine flashes due to the cat. convertor being gone, and letting an over sufficent egr flow....just an idea....

btw...my egr valve/transducer kajigger is all new, as with the vacuume lines and what not running to them, i also swapped my little solenoild switch things on the front of the engine when i got my new motor.....when i got the engine, i re-ringed and put new bearings into it, and cleaned every little passage/port on the intake manifold, so i know mine isnt an issue with the egr system itself...ive had a couple other vehicles that had this same exact issue after my exhaust work....which on all 3 of my vehicles i have ive enlarged the exhaust size, and put the smallest case sized turbo muffler to somewhat tame the noise....and removed the cat. so i believe that is my issue

a flashing engine light means there is some kind of misfire.  check the codes and see what ya got.

Yeap, you're right. I used my code reader and along with my regular P0135 (oxygen sensor), P0135P (oxygen sensor related, not sure exactly what though), and P0500 (Vehicle Speed Sensor), I now have a new code! Yay! P0303 (cylinder 3 misfire detected). So, Museboy was right. What causes a misfire?

In most cases an engine light on means there is a problem. When the engine light is flashing constantly it means that there is a problem that if you continue to drive it will cause catalylic convertor damage. I am a mechanic and know this is true with domestics and most imports. I can't see why suzuki would be ant different.

For a misfire, check the basics first.  Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and timing.
