Title: Samurai + 33's... gearing?
Post by: explosivo on October 29, 2004, 08:19:20 PM
Would 5.12's be too low for 33's on a samurai?

i think 4.62s are bang on for 31s, and stock for samis are 4.10s i believe unless its a 1.0L then i think its 3.73 or somethin...
i'd try to meet somewhere between 5.12 and 4.62 if anything exists
cause if anything 5.12 would be too high... dont quote me though  :-/

stock samurai r&p is 3.73

head over to yahoo and join the offroad tech group.  There are a couple gearing spreadsheets over there that you can download which will answer all your gearing questions.

5.12's would be good on the street but wouldnt be low enough in low range. I have a buddy who has taht exact setup and he ended up getting the 4-1 case also.

I'm running 33's and 5'13's on my truck and trailability is great!  on the road works well too but a tad slow for the hwy.  I believe 4.62's would set the speedo stock when you run 33's, but the motor will be workin a bit harder to keep up the speed.

my opinion? go with the 5.13's especially if your running a 1.3 and don't be shy to revv that motor a bit more than usual, that's what they were built for

5.13's and 33's are the ticket without a t-case. Then if you WANT add a 4:1 and you are dialed in!!

I just got 5.38 in my truck with 35's and it's a little slow for the highway. So your best bet is probably 4.62 to get as close to stock as possible. But what ever you do make it hert, then you could any thing, I was running 35's with stock 3.73 gearing and doing fine.

I am 100% certain  that the 1.3L samurais (which means all of them) have 3.73s in the R&Ps.  SJ410s (which have 1.0L and are not samurais) have 4.11 in the diffs.

Your source is probably good, you just had the numbers reversed in your original post.  It only makes sense that a lower powered motor would have higher gears....

PS:  besides, NC_Zuk said I'm right.   ;D

4.62's would take you to stock. With 4.62's and the 31's on my samurai the speedometer reads about 62 when the GPS reads 55. 5th is useable without a tail wind.

Low range is not low enough. I have to use a lot more momentum than the guys with tcase gears.

You would probably be happier with tcase gears. 4.89s or 5.14s would get you close to stock in high range AND give you real low range.

Unless you are getting a deal on 3rd members, the cost for the tcase gears should not be much more than

if u gear down the t-case u gear down ur running gear. you could go 6.5:1 t-case and it also reduces ur high rang not sure what the ratios r. check out calmini. i have a sammi with 32's with a spoa and stock gears. it was hurting when we took it rock crawling and hihway blows. mud and sand r good.

I would have to say go with the T-Case gears like zutefisk said unless your are getting a deal on the gears.  They are easy to install and the 6.5:1 kit will bring you right into stock hi range and give you that extra crawling speed.  I find 2nd and 3rd work perfect for general trail use and 1st allowes me to crawl up and around without to much fuss.

Additionally, it makes finding a spare set of gears to carry around a lot easier.

I think there is one year the sammi came with a 3.90 gear set (85?) had a pair swapped in my first zook and
it came from a 1.3L sammi

perfect for upgrading to 235's
