Hey all,
I put some general grabber 225/75r16s A/Ts on my vitara and am getting alot of rub on the frame. The tread and sidewall are hitting in the rear of the fender well frame to be exact. I try to turn only as much as needed to avoid the rub for now, but I am thinking about just adding wheel spacers since i cant afford new rims.
What size should the spacers be and do they cause any problems (i.e. loosen up easy, unbalance tires)?
Also will I need to do a body lift to avoid them hitting the fenders? I was already was looking into a 2" body since it seemed like the next step for my zuk anyways!
Thanks
James

i run 31 inch swampers with stock rims and no spacers. i rub the frame hard if i turn too sharp but by the looks of things if i add wheel spacers it looks like i might rub the inner fender.... adding a body lift won't help with the frame rub issue but maybe with the fender rubbing.. good luck!

Wheel spacers will make you rub even more. Lift it or start hammering and cutting the fender well trim. Spacers will move you away from the frame but will increase the tires arc and rub the fenders.

You need longer A-arms.

1 inch wheel spacers WILL NOT make it rub more on the frame. They WILL eliminate rubbing on the frame. It appears they may cause more contact with the plastic fender flares, though. I think the only way to eliminate the rubbing on the fenders with 31" tires, is to hack the sh#! out of the the fenders and front bumper, or get the Calmini kit with longer control arms (it moves the wheels forward a little from what I understand). Good luck!

Hey dented, could you post a pic of your truck with these tires? I'm thinking of going with that size on my bone stock 2.0 tracker, and would like to see what it'll look like.
Also, is your Vit a 2.0 or a v6? If 2.0, how do you find the loss of power, and how much did your fuel mileage increase? do you have stock gears?
Thanks for the info.

sorry guys for not replying sooner... im in a leadership school thats has me busy all week..

I have a 2.OL auto, there is a little power lose but its not that noticable... and as for fuel, no idea yet ive just filled up the tank so i will find out soon for city driving. I posted a pic on the sticky in this forum its one of the last... or click my car domain link.. the last pic on it is with the new tires.

i know.. or a sas! but sadly im to broke.. :'(
ok...
i dont understand how moving the rim away from the frame with wheelspacers would cause the tires to rub the fram more?! please explain?!
i get it will cause the tires to rub the fender when flexed.. but wouldnt doing a 2" bodylift with the spacers help keep that from happening..
thanks guys

It won't. It can cause more rubbing on the fenders, though. With a 2" body lift, and the CALMINI lift, I think you can probably get away with up to 245 70 16s with no rubbing. 245 75 16s would probably just rub on the front bumper, but don't quote me on that.
I know that with a 2" body lift, 1" spacers and the Rocky Road suspension kit you still get rubbing with 245 75 16s. I'm speaking from experience on that one! I think that you'd be okay with 1" spacers, 2" body lift, any suspension lift and 225 75 16s. I don't think you'd get any rubbing with that scenario.

sounds good!
Now whats the best body lift? UHMW,steel ,or alluminum?
-also-
After checking RRO price on wheel spacers 2 sets of them would cost as much as new rims.. anyone else sell them?
thanks again

How bad is the rubbing? Both of ours and a few of my older style Trackers have rubbed the frame with slightly larger tires on the stock rims. Nothing to be worried about unless your AT's are somehow more aggressive than any of the MT's I've run. Never really damaged the tires or did anything to the frame more than make the metal shiney right at that spot. Every oil change/tire rotation I would just paint over the rub mark on each side.
-
I can feel the treads catching the frame, hear it, and also smell a little rubber burn on sharp turns. Also, the paint is burnt off showing where the tread and sidewalls hit.. i knew from asking before they would rub.. just seems like it may be to the point of damaging the tires.. since they were not the cheapest things in the world.. pushing them out and the body up seems like the best idea to prolong their lives!
My ATs tread depth is/was 17/ 32nds.
any takers on best body lift material?

My stock skinney ass tiny tires rubbed right out of the dealership.
Sounds cool when the side lugs rub the frame and it scares the crap out of old ladies in the mall parking lot.

I have 1 inch coil spacers and was able to put 245/70/16 a/t tires with just a bit of rubbing on the front of the wheel well, a bit of sanding/cutting (its just plastic) and no more rubbing...but i have to be careful because on full lock turning the inside of the tires touch the inner frame...hard to explain but it causes entire vehicle to shake. If the 235/70/16 tires were not back ordered I would have got them instead.
Wheel spacers will definately cause more rubbing. I had them installed before I got the big tires and they rubbed and made the turning radius on the truck increase dramatically (didn't like them).
FYI: With stock height you can put 225/70/16 tires with no rubbing at all, and they fill the wheel well nicely, no rubbing, only 4% spedometer difference.

You can quote me. With 2.5" CALMINI lift, AND a 3" CALMINI Body lift, I can fit LT245/75R16 MTs (31"s), but after a LOT of trimming, or should I say:
complete removal of the rocker foo-foo,
removal of the mudflap flares on the rear bumper,
cutting 6" off the bottom of the plastic rear bumper,
removal of the front bumper and installing a high&tight steel bumper.
I still have minor frame AND sway bar rubbing at full lock.
If you want to really use 31"s (and I use my stuff hard), you need 5.5" of lift and copious trimming. Anything larger, you will need an SAS.

What the..... Sway bar rubbing? Yankee-Tim?? Shenanigans!

No Shenanigans here.
I stand by my "ditch the sway bar" comments. Except my rig isn't like everyone elses. Mine's got one of the rare, 1 0f 6 in the whole world, Rotational Dynamics Suzuki Sway Bar Quick Disconnects. :P
Ditch the bar, or buy mine for like a gazillion dollars. ;)
-
You wouldn't believe how hard I looked for one of those.
Gimme some pics. I've hesitated in approaching the guys in the prototype machine shop here at work to shorten my panhard bar, but if I could bundle it with something actually interesting....
-
you can adjust the turn limit screws if you have to just have a friend turn the steering wheel from side to side and back out the screws or you may have to buy longer screws and dont for get to tighten the lock screw
-
Trust me, you don't want on of these. Since the sway bar trails the axle, unlike the Sidekick, you have to lie down in the mud/dirt and climb under your truck to pull the pin. Frankly, it sucks, and why the pin hasn't bee put back in since I don't remember.
Now, on NYROCATV.com, undet the Suzuki King Quad forum, there is a guy building remote contolled sway bar discos for the King. And since the King and the Vits both use the same diameter bar stock, it would fit on any later Zook 4x4.
