Hello,
I am expecting the parts for around a 4.5-5" lift on my 1993 samurai and in the meantime I want to also order tires to replace the stock ones. I can't make up my mind between all-terrain or mud-terrain tires either from bridgestone or bfgoodrich which would be available here. Which type would you recommend? I would approximate driving on highway around 60% and the rest offroad.
I have picked 31" as a suitable size as I do now want to upgrade the axles to HD anytime soon. Any suggestions?
Would the change of gearing become a must immediately by changing from stock size (195/15) to 31"?
Thank you.

Some people say no I say YES, YES, YES... keep that power
I would recommend at least 4.1 in transfercase or 4.62 in the diffs for 31's
and mud terrain that way it gives you the traction you want off road and not too bad on road.

I'm with Bash on this one. Transfer case or gears are a must, and you shouldn't have any problems with 31" tires as long as you avoid binding up the front end. Also, when backing up try to keep your tires straight. A majority of our broken birfields in the club come from backing up hills or obstacles.
4.89:1 should keep you in the power just fine with the 31" tires.
