Title: Transmission repair update
Post by: nuts4hotwheels on February 01, 2008, 09:56:34 AM
I put the Tracker in the shop to have the tranny repaired.  It is going to cost $1775 out the door for a complete rebuild. I was budgeting $2000, so that is good and I cant wait to get her back.

Sidekickmuddog,

I am also faced with having to rebuild my Samurai transmission....I've never done this before but how complicated can it be? It's just gears and bearings. Think of all the other cool stuff and or tools you could buy with that $1775... not to mention the knowledge and confidence that come with doing it yourself.

The biggest advancement in home auto mechanics was the invention of the disposable rubber glove!....  rebuild kit goes for about $75-90.

Just for what it's worth,
Dennis

The hardest part of the of the rebuild is some of the special tools that are needed to pull it apart. I have the bearings sitting in the tool box waiting for the rebuild, just need to pick up the synchros so I can do a complete rebuild. And finding the tools to pull it apart. Way cheaper than $1800  by about $1500/1600.

Dang, if that's a manual tranny, the rebuild kit is about a hundred bucks!   :(  :o

It is an automatic.  I live in an apartment and do not have the tools or the place to rebuild a tranny.
