hi all, been a lil busy lately, ya know how it is. i think my winter project is going to be to turn my ac pump into an air compressor. i removed it last year is good working order to get more hp. but since i plan on getting an air locker this spring.... seems like a good idea. :P
anyway, i have been reading a bit on it but all the info i find is for trucks or heeps (what a shock). Q is, has anyone done this with a stock trackick ac? got info, links or anything? need all ya got ;D thanks all!

The information is more or less
universal, they are all the same
basic type of pump, just improvise
for the Track/Kick and take lots of
pics for a future article

Wild is right. The process is the same. I did it but I didn't take any pics, and BOTH my pumps took a poop.

These pumps need oil in the Crank Case
as well as the cylinders.
Refrigerant has an oil charge that keeps
the pump from seizing up, you want to
include an oil soaked filter and squirt the
compressor from time to time to keep it
alive
An alternative to the A/C compressor style
would be a compressor from a Cadillac or
a Lincoln that has the air ride suspension,
cheeper to get, and there must be thousands
of those land barges rusting in the wrecking yards

I use a pump from an old 70's style travel trailer that was used to pump up the water tank, they even come with an automatic shut off on them also.

My brother and I did this to my '89 Sidekick, using the stock A/C compressor. It works quite well. We used an inline oiler, like what air tools use, to keep the pump happy, then run the compressed air through the condenser to cool it. After that, the air goes through an oil removing filter, then air line splits into a small tank, a pressure switch (on at 90psi and off at 110psi, I think), a pressure releif valve (125psi), and lines to a quick connect and an in cab pressure gauge.
We largely left the A/C plumbing stock, and used all the stock A/C wiring, so the electric fan tuns on when the compressor is running, keeping the compressed air cool. The pressure switch we used even fits into the stock wiring harness.
If I remember correctly, with the engine held at about 3000 rpm, the system will take a 30x9.5 tire from 12psi to 24psi in about 15 seconds.
Unfortunately, we didn't take any pictures of the install or final product.

I know, I kicked myself when I realized we hadn't taken any.

Take one now! >:(

humm i should really do this with the AC compressor i got.  i have been putting it off but i bet i could get better traction with about 10PSI in the tires.  Beadlocks here i come :-/

7-8 " rims, bias Swampers
don't need beadlocks, even
at 2-3 PSI :o

I run 5 psi all the time with 10 inch rims and radials. Ive only blown a bead once in 5 years.

I blew 3 all at the same time with 12 PSI. but that was with my chrome plated junk rims. going to sand blast the rims this winter.

During the UA of all times, too ;D
Also, the only thing I've heard of happening when running low pressure in bias-ply tires is that they slip on the rim and end up out of weight when aired down :-/

;Dgood into, as always. Whipp!!! can you get a photo or 2? and do you remember where you got the presure switch from?
the travel trailer idea sounds good too. does that rin off the belts or pure el.? is it slow?
thanks all. and when i do this i will try to take pics ;)

My brother found the switch from a local guy, I'll see if he remembers the contact info.
For other parts you may want/need, I'd suggest McMaster-Carr:http://www.mcmaster.com We also bought some fittings from Home Depot.
When I get home tonight, I'll post some pictures.

There is a guy in the Seattle-ish area selling a converted AC unit for the 1.3 for 75 if anyone is interested. I plan on just going electric or I would pick it up and try to hack it onto the 1 Liter.

I use the stock a/c compressor with an oil seperator, pressure switch, check valve, 2.5 gal tank, and some other things. I use synthetic PAG 15 oil. The switch and check valve I got from one of those onboard air companys. Here's a pic. Any ?'s just ask or check the how to on my site.

Nice Idea you got there 87BlackSami..
I just went with the Viair 400 instead.

Works great and portable.

Thanks. The reason I went the route I did is because I run an air ratchet, impact gun, blow gun, and can fill my 35's from 14 psi to 30 in 12-15 seconds. It's nice to just plug in an air hose to my bumper and have 150psi with scfm's.
Oh yeah I almost forgot the best part. A pair of trumpet air horns from a 2 1/2 ton army truck (great for those sleepy drivers at the lights ;D).

does that scicor jack under the hood get much use ::)

How else do you think he opens his hood? ;D

I knew someone would notice it. I purposely left that there because it drives a friend of mine nuts. Why remove it, what would I put there, a maglight? I carry a high lift which suck for tight places so that's why I have the scissor for those odd jobs.

Dang. Its a bummer I gave away my a/c to someone that needed it :'( ;)
I guess I'll just have to wait the minute or two it takes to fill my little 32s ::)

will that jack even extend enough to touch the frame? =) :P

??? In that case I'd use the high lift, but if I broke a spring I could put the scissor jack between the axle and bump stop to get me off the trail. Do you understand now why I keep it? ::) You just never know if you'll need it.

OK, now for my pictures. The light was pretty harsh, so my apologies.
The air filter and oiler. This oiler has an adjustable rate and a reservoir that makes it easy to see how much oil is left. The oil drips into the air stream in the upper bubble, making it easy to gauge the rate that oil is being used.

The view showing the air lines going from the oiler to the compressor, and from the compressor to the condensor. The copper line near the radiator runs to the in cab pressure gauge.

Here we have the oil separating filter, upper right., with a T to the converted propane tank and the air line. In the middle, is the manifold, which branches to the pressure switch, pressure relief valve, and the guage line.

A different angle of the above stuff.http://whipp.no-ip.org/gallery/albums/oba/img_2202.sized.jpg[/img]
My pressure guage (oil filled). It looks like the blinker knob blocks the view, but the visibility is really just fine.
