Title: Questions about the Tracker Air Intake
Post by: Carnage on February 07, 2008, 08:53:11 PM
1. Does anyone know the part number for the STOCK air filter from a 96 tracker?
(Once I got brake pads and they got me the ones for a 96
and for some reason it didnt fit so I just want to make sure)

2. And what purpose does the "vaccuum reservoir" serve?
(the copper thing on the intake tube)
If I want to fab a new tube can I use just any chamber or are the dimensions important as well?

you wantin a stock filter? whats wrong with the high flow on it?

I think that copper pimple is really just a noise suppressor. I looked at it tonight when I installed a new valve cover gasket as I had it sitting on a bench.

If the filter for a '96 is the same as a '95, I can get you a PN. It is for a Hastings fliter but if you go to a Napa or decent auto parts store you can get it cross referenced to what you can get.

Post it up. Any idea is a good one. It might sound stupid to yourself but some one may see it as what they were looking for.

And let the negitive comments on your ideas/thoughts slide off of you. They will not hurt anything but ego and pride.

i have 2 trackers, one of them has a cone filter and the other has the stock airbox
the picture is used to illustrate the vaccuum reservoir (but not the air filter)

and ive only gotten asshole comments when acting assholy
which makes perfect sense if you think about it  :P

yea, that thing serves 2 purposes
1) noise suppression ... it acts a bit as a resonator chamber to mellow the sound of the intake under hard throttle
2) air reserve ... it increases the volume of air that is *freely* available under hard acceleration.

If you don't mind a bit of noise and have a free enough flowing filter, it is unnecessary ... then again, it really dowen't hurt to have it (other than possibly being in the way of something else you may wanna mount in there ...

Thx for the quick reponse.

your ride rocks!
you actually lost gas milege? bummer
I am goin to mount the IAT just out side the filter,
that is how it is on my truck, works fine.(actually from K/N that way)
well we will see.

thx again

yeah lost a little mpg

i remember someone around had a drop-in K&N filter

(theres so many people I cant remember who it was)

I do have these questions about the drop-in K&N filter
1. Part Number
2. Cost
3. Power Increase/Decrease
4. Gas Mileage Increase/Decrease

Post by: Drone637 on February 12, 2008, 05:53:04 PM
Not sure about the part number, but I can fill in the rest.

2.  Pretty cheap.  I think I picked it up on Ebay for around 40.

3.  Slight increase in power on the freeway, little bit quicker throttle response.  Need to clean mine out again...

4.  No real change in the milage.

I would look at getting a generic synthetic instead and just doing a short ram conversion.  The synthetics can be cleaned with water and don't have the 'must be dirty to work' deal going on with them.  But you can't beat the K&N for ease of install.

thanks Drone

theres also the debate between K&N and TrueFlow (which uses a foam like material)

AEM has their DRYFLOW filters as well.  I have read some reviews that really like them, but the options are a bit limited right now.

its not a K&N

I just got any filter that matched the size I needed

Ultimately its probably best to replace the rubber tube
(a lot of the trackers I see have cracks in them, which is common)

I'm going to hijack your thread here a bit..

A while back there was a company called rotational dynamics, they made tunable aluminum pulleys and I think a throttle body spacer. Similar to what they offer for 4.0L jeeps. It was just an aluminum block machined to match the intake and you bolted it in under the throttle body. Theory was it increase I believe torque. Anybody heard of anything like this? Or now about the company?

I do recall a thread on this site about that, maybe about a year, year and a half ago.  I recall a lot of opinions stating that throttle body spacers were bunk.  Beats me, though.

Dang, I have dealt with the guy that started RD. If any one has a two belt aluminum crank pulley, you can thank me know.

Can't really help on the kick filter issue though.

Zaggy made one for a Track/Kick. The spacer is meant to improve power by increasing the size of the plenum chamber. It really depends on how good the stock manifold is so it may work for some motors and not others.

ok... so to recap

Carquest #88207 (1992-98 GEO TRACKER SIDEKICK)

I know they make a difference on the TBI Jeeps.  Especially the 2.5L.  :)
