Title: 1.8 pos or not

I've seen a few people on here refer to the 1.8 as a pos(not a desirable motor). Why is this? I've got a 4 door I can get real cheap.

not only POS, but big f'ing POS !!!
you'd be better to put a pinto power plant(and thats not intended as a joke, i'v seen pintos smoke vetts)

Thats too bad. My 1.6 can take a beating and it kinda likes it, it seems to run better every time. I'd hate to take the time to swap motors and electrical only to have it die first time out.

II have been intending to ask the same question.  I bought one a couple of years ago and have had no problems.  I also have not seen any specific problems mentioned on these forums.  I understand they were made for only 3 years, but apparently are the basis for the 2 liter engine that was put in later models.  I don't get ego involved in my vehicles, so that is not an issue.  I have not seen any evidence of reliability problems, which is my main concern.  Is there an issue with the engine beyond unavailability of aftermarket parts?

I'm curious as well  ???  ??? I've put over 90000 miles on a 1.8 and have had no out of the ordinary problems with it for having 140000 total on it. What makes that a POS??? I also don't get egos involved with my vehicles I'm just curious what problems make it so bad?

You guys better knock on wood now. Talkin all nice about your rigs. Everytime I say something about mine working or running good something always happens to it.  Last time is was helping some jeep guy whos jeep broke doen on the trail after hitting some water. I was telling him about how good my trackick has been and works. On the way home I got an oil leak. Front seal. Then water pump. A week later the trans. Three weeks after that engine. I am done telling people how well mt rig is workin. Nothin but trouble for me.LOL

mines' not a 1.8 its a 1.6 but i'm pretty sure its a pos.i've
replaced the alternator starter cps distributor .... and now i need the multi switch for the head lights. and a tranny a clutch and a clutch cable.........its a pos.

I've had great luck with mine.  Runs strong, burns no oil, and gets decent mileage.  Not quite as good of mileage as the 1.6 16v, but I have more power and its noticeable. 

Just for fun I did a search of 1.8L to see what came up.  I got tired of looking through the pages when the only two negative comments that stood out were the overheating thread and one post about timing chain issues derived from running incorrect oil viscosity.. 

I'm really not worried about either problem as I always use 5W-30 in my kick and the cooling system is in good order.

I think I'll motor-on with the 1.8 Sport for now.  If something should happen though I'll probably upgrade to a 99+ Tracker 2.0 5-spd.

The Ford 2.3L I4 is a good engine to be sure, but I'll stick with the fuel injected 1.8L for now thanks.

Chain stretch seems to be a problem if you use heavier than 5-30 oil,
that's the only problem I have heard of

I'm up in Bentonville. I think it's the humidity that causes all the failures. I've gone through starters, alternators, ignition switches, speedo cables etc. When I lived in Colorado, this stuff hardly ever went bad. Seems like I change starters on any used vehicle I buy.

I would agree. Mine will act up a little when the humidity is realy high. Some kind of electrical gremlins I guess. Other than that she purrs like a 140000 kitten.  ;D

My 1.6L has 120k miles on it, and it runs great. I'm fanatical about engine maintenance though.

 The main problem I've seen with the 1.8s versus the 1.6s are pretty much the same problem. Lack of maintenance causing a rod to make a speed hole in the side of the block. Other than that they seem to be pretty reliable.
 They also have a little more upgrade potential though. The 2.0 and 2.3 will bolt up in it's place. The 2.3 is from the 2004 up Aerio.
