Hello everybody...
I new at this forum but I've been reading and searching a fair bit. Have to say this is a superb forum with lots of info and people willing to help.
So my ? are:
What is the diff gear ratio in my stock 98' Sidekick 1.6 16v RWD? I've been told it's a 4.80 ratio but the guy was not sure. Also, I wish to upgrade (well in this case would be a downgrade) the ratio to, say, a 4.25 or so, since I mainly use my Sidekick in the street and when traveling long distances the engine suffered a bit (it recently died on me and I'm making a J20A swap off an 02 Aerio). Does someone know where I can get lower ratio gear kits?
I would really appreciate any help on the matter. Thanks.
BTW, if you would like to see pics of my Sidekick and the conversion progress, got to this link:

1) Type "ratios" into the search box above.
2) Click on the "search" button.
3) Click on some of the topics in the list of results. When I searched, "Factory gear ratio #2" was right up top.

Go figure!!!
I was breacking my head searching for fancy tags and it was a simple as "ratios". Kind of feel stupid right now, hummm.
Thanks a lot.

Don't we all do it. Welcome to the forum

I was originally going to reply with a link to an identical topic from about a week ago (where I was a bit more cranky, but which did eventually include the same information), but it looks like a zealous moderator must have deleted the whole thread. Poof.
You can be in charge of passing the info forward to the next guy who asks. I'm setting the over/under on when it happens at 11 days...

Nice engine swap. How about a write up?

Nice engine swap. How about a write up?
Well, I'm doing it, just that it's in Spanish (it's my first language). Though, the other day I was just thinking of doing an English version write-up. I think I'll give it a try.
I've invested too many hours on the web looking for information on this sort of engine swap but it's very scarce so I talked to my mechanic about making plans (diagrams) of the engine mounts, flywheel mods (it seems that you can use the original J20A or J23A flywheel) and wiring harness mod as we go about it. My aim is to make a swap kit available that anybody could afford. It's not for sure though, but those are my plans.
Also, I'm thinking of boosting it, say 8psi, and if all goes well, maybe you will see a turbo kit too.
For now, I'm concentrating on making a swap with as many OEM, unmodified parts as possible (meaning, with almost no parts machining or as less as possible). Just today, I found a way of not modifying the OEM flywheel that I'm using as opposed to what I've read on other swaps I found on the web.
You can go to this address and use Altavista's Babblefish to translate the text:

It may be a bit difficult to understand as I used too many spanish street slangs. If not, as soon as I finish the swap, I'll be making a complete write-up in both language versions (obviously, if I decide to make the kit I'll omit some info but not so much to leave anybody lost).
BTW, my initial ? on the diff gears I answered it from the info on this forum, so I gotta that everybody who participated on those threads. Thaks guys!
Now I'm off to look for a 4.30 Diff Assy....

The search function is a nice tool but just having some one reply to you question is a little more user friendly.

Yup... Thanks you all!!!

So, anyway, I'm an asshole (agujero del burro?). So, carry on.

Hahaha!!! Nice one!!!!! LOL!!!! More like "culo de burro" but in all reality "asshole" would more likely be a stronger word for "stupid" or "stupid ass"... dude, are my gonna get banned for this???!!!! LOL
Naaahh dude, if it wasn't for you maybe I wouldn't get my answer.... TNX bro!!!
Hey, to give you guys a preview on the swap, some new info I learned today is that in order to get the engine in without any bumping or mods of steering parts, I have to replace the stock oil pan from the J20A (remember, mine's off an Aerio). The hump on the Aerio oilpan (both J20A and J23A) is located towards the front of the engine, so by changing it I need to change the oil pickup "filter?" too.
Just a "tease" on what I'll be discussing in the write-up. I think I'll have to open a new thread...
Take care people.
