Title: engine year ID...
Post by: Chief on February 17, 2008, 11:52:34 AM
Just bought a 91 tracker, and I can tell the engine has been pulled, supposedly for a bottom end rebuild (believable, it's runs great!) but I think it's from an earlier year, like a 89 or so. the intake is different from my 94 and my other 91 I had. Hints?

There must be a casting # some where on the block, but I'm not sure how to read that.

Dude, it's pretty clean, but it's still a 91!! I don't know how to see through the oil slick!  ???

Does the "different intake" have any custom brackets in place of the originals or does it look oem.

It's OEM, I think it's one from like 89 or so?

Check to see what is stamped on the block on the driver's side at the very rear edge where the bellhousing bolts up to it.  An '89 should have a G13 (1296cc) engine - the same one as late-model Samurais have.

Otherwise, I believe it should have a 1.6 8-valve with throttle body injection.  The 8-valve can be identified by the sparkplugs coming out the driver's side of the head as opposed to through the valve cover on the 16-valve.

I hope this helps!
