Title: Zuwharrie 4-dr Action pics
Post by: whitfield on October 21, 2004, 05:49:15 PM
I got some wheeling pics back from Zuwharrie that I'd like to share.  Many are not showing the actuall terrain due to the camera.   The shot with the 3 guys on the drivers front was a almost a roll (but it looks level).  I got out and looked it over, Inched forward and watched the front end reach for the sky.   :o  I was almost sideways angled to the right on a steep off camber up hill.  I'm still picking seat out of my backside.
Overall everything on the 4-dr worked well.  I can not say enough about the 4:1 gear set.  The auto in low 1 would crawl down hill so slow that somtimes I'd need to shift to second to keep the sammy behind me from running me over.  The 4:1 with the auto was awsome.  I could crawl on the rocks with no violent Axle snapping clutch work.  The 4:1 would also allow up shifts to second on ANY hill.   ;)  It rocked.  THe welded rear diff worked extreemly well and was transparent off road, but presented lots of Body roll on road from the short rear lower control arms pivoting upwards in the turns.  Gotta lock the front to make the bigger ledge rock climbs.  Once I lift a front tire I might as well be in 2wd.
I still have some bugs to play with and I'm still fine tuning the suspension.   (Looking for Cherokee 3" lift fornt coils C H E A P ).  Over all the current suspension set up works smooth and provides good travel at speed on the trail.  The coils soak up the bumps SOOO well.  On extreem down hills as the trucks weight shifts forward, the front springs would still bottom alot.  I think the rate is good but the legnth could be longer, maybe +2 more.  I am still riding low in the travel also the springs might have settled some.   Only tire rub all weekend was just lightly on the rear of the frame up front (Frame below the a-pilar, actual frame rail) at full stuff / full lock.

Enough of me rambeling here's the pics.  (5 per post)

correct me if i'm wrong, but it seems to me that your 4 door has a lot of usable travel front and back, but the actual ride height is pretty average.

clearance is good, but only if you have travel to compliment. travel without clearance may somtimes work against you? esp. with IFS.

great pics. love your work.

thanks, But I'm a little confused on your question...  :-/

Do you mean:

I am limited to the stock travel in the front.  I have been searching and brainstorming for ideias on a centered front diff and long travel lower A-arms.   This would increase the front trave.   THe modified rear ha good travel and works well.   On the rear I intend to add 1" more of lift, Loose the 1.75" coil spacer, and extend the lower rear link arms to the next hole up in the frame (Under the B-pillar).

The problem I see hear is the short rear arm is lifting the front. Mine used to do that a lot.

BTW cool pics man, When you post pics you dont mess around!

It's the same symptom of the TJ's design. When lifting it greater than 4" or more, with the front axle hire than the rear axle, the rear axle will crawl underneath the vehicle rather than push it, as the rear axles does this, the front gets lighter. That's one of the biggest reasons the aftermarket went with a long arm suspension lift. Not only does this negate (not to 0, but much lesser) the rear axle walk effect, but the design also negates the effect of the track arm design.

That pic is SOOOO deceiving. That was on a STEEP offcamber hilclimb. He was about 2 inches from rolling down the hill :o

That will do it too! ;D I was just noticing how much angle was on the rear lower arm. Mine used to look like that... and then my front would look like that too!  :P ;D I just wanted to make sure he was aware of what a longer lower arm would do. Now that you mentioned it I went back and took a second look... I see it now.

Thanks,  Long arm rear is in the works, as well as another spring configuration, locked front, and Bumpers.
