I'm putting in 2"spring spacers on my 95 tracker. On the rear what year crown vic shocks do I want to get?Is there one brand better than the other for this or is there a better option than the crown vic shock?
Thanks!

The 91 Crown Vic shocks are the cheapest, and they're 1.5" longer extended, you can make this 2" by adding a .5" thick nut as a spacer on the top mounting stud before you put on the first bushing/washer. There are others, like the 99 F150 shocks for 3" longer, but they're more expensive. You want to get a light duty shock.

92's were like 13 a piece.
-
they're all the same if i recall correctly... the parts guy can tell you if the part #'s differ... don't buy the police interceptor version. get longer shocks then the crown vics... i use 95 mustang rear shocks, perfect mounting points and don't need any extra hardward for the bottom bolt. i picked 95 because i used to own a 95 mustang... anyway, they are about 3inches longer than stock, maybe more.....

I'm sure they're the same, when I started to reply, there were no relpies :-[
-
yeah i believe they are the exact same......... hey uncivilized do you know of any struts that are the same but like 2" longer if that makes sense.

Struts = OME only.

I've read that a front strut from an 89-ish Colt wagon was 1.5" longer than the Trackick strut, but all parts stores around here didn't have one in stock for me to compare them. I'm sure there is one, but it just hasn't been discovered yet. Personally, for basic off road use, I think the Trackick struts are fine besides the valving, there is 2" of travel(up travel) in the strut that isn't being used in a stock setup so adding a strut spacer makes some of that usable.

strut spacer = flipping the mount? Yes, No?
-
Here the Crown vics are $20 the ford f150s are $32 is the extra 1" over the 2" Crown vic shocks worth it? And do I haver to do anything special to get the CV or mustang shock to fit?
-

Flipping the mount is another way to extend it.
-
is that 92' crown victoria year works for 98 sidekick?
-
Big Dog, Where are you getting your 2" spacers?
-
the crown vic will require a 'sleeve' to be inserted into the bushing so the bolt fits in properly, with the 95 mustang shocks i bought (munroe i think) i did not need anything, the shocks fit perfectly. you may want to double check on the length of the f150's, i thought they were longer compressed and moer than 3inches longer than stock when extended.

Strut flip = 3/"' or 2"? Is this better than the 2" extensions sold by Boondox?
-
mount flip is equal to 2" i think

if you search through the gen 2 section you will find a thread somewhere that has has compressed and extended lengths of several rear shocks which have been used.
-
Thanks! Just wondering if Ranger springs would be better than 2" spacers. That would be the last of my questions. I have pretty much decided to go 2" susp, and 2" body lift. I would also like to lift the gas tank as well. I saw a DIY thread on that but it included some frame cutting. Definately more than I want with that. Thanks for your help!

Mallard I made my own out of nylatronon my lathe there are a few options for making them yourself. And a guy on here JEFF1985 (I think) sells them for a good price if you don't want to frig with them.
Bzzzr2 from what your saying the 95 mustang shock is a better replacement than the crown vic.And it's a straight bolt in with more travel ?? Both bonuses ! I'll check the price out tomorrow.
Thanks!

Thanks! I am working on getting some from Jeff as we speak! HOORAY!

i want to put a plug in for jeff's spacers.
get the 2" for the rear, but unless you have some big winch on the front, 1 1/2" in front keeps it pretty level (i bought 4- 2"ers and tried them in front. took it all apart, cut 1/2" off and reinstalled).
i'm quite happy now.
not necessary, but you might think about making some spacers for your flipped strut mounts. i used 1/2" pvc sheet.
i also used mustang rear shocks. bottom line monroes. direct bolt in.

Did you compare the extended lenght with the sidekick shock? ...just wondering how much longer they are.

yes
also check the shock book at the parts store- there were some longer shocks, but i was afraid of spitting springs if i dropped things too far- the book has compressed and extended measurements and mounting styles.
-
sorry
i just realized i didn't actually answer your question- and i forget the exact measurements-but they were a little more than 2" longer (extended) and very similar compression span.
they allow pretty decent movement and ride soft.
-
I would guess the mustang shocks would be best saved for 2" and higher lifts because anything lifted less than that would risk ejecting the springs under full droop. The shocks are the only thing that limit down-travel in the rear of a kick...
-
So with a 2" spring spacer I shouldn't have any problem?? I don't want to be ejecting springs!
-
i have a 1.75 inch spacer and xl7 coils which are only 1/2 inch longer than my stock tracker springs were. the coils are solid at full droop with rustang shocks. can't promise anything for sure though as mine is a 2003.
-
Maybe this will help...
Suzuki shock; 12.12" compress
18,25" extend
6.125" travel
crown vic shock; 12.12"compress
20." extend
7.87" travel
mustang shock; 14.5 compress
19.12 extend
4.6 travel
i've got that from Monroe spec sheet...
and i also get those part number for the strut, here they are #71962 and #171831 i don't know what they are for, someone will need too compared them, because i'm not sure if they fit....
-
the mustang specs are not for the same mustang shock that i am using, wish i had the actual part number to share with you guys.
with all this chatter about shocks and different measurements coming up i would suggest getting into a parts shop and doing a true hands on comparison!! grab a zuki shock, crown vic shock and a mustang shock; compress and extend them all and go for it. with the mustand shocks there may be more than one version, i am not sure... so go for the ultra cheapos like myself & rascott.

After doing a search on this topic, it just seems like someone should line it out (you know, all the options) and make it a sticky. I am swimming in a sea of confusion and afraid to make a decision thinking I might miss something between this and the other four BBS's. I would love to see a spacer vs. GV springs comparison as well. I have heard that on a 95 LWB track/kick, you can put OME962 GV springs in the front with OME955 Medium Kick duty springs in the rear with a .75" spacer to make it level for a grand total of 3" of lift. It looks to me like that is very similar to the Boondox kit, but you still have to do the strut flip and crown vic shocks. But is it really 3" or would you be better off with 2" coil spacers with the flip/crown mix? The OME springs are $72 a piece from ARB, so the question becomes $150ish vs. $288 plus shipping???
I think the bottom line is that I (I don't think I am alone) want the most lift for the least money or having to deal with Calmini. If anyone knows of a difinitive source for comparison, I would love to see it!
(Sorry for the rant...)

MaD.72 GreatI thought I had it figured out and now you post that! I just ordered the mustang shocks! Now the Crown Vic looks like the shock to use .Is there a definate ?I just ordered the mustang shock $23.00 CND will these be the cheap ones that I need??

that is the right way to be looking at it- measure your movement and buys or make the parts that fit your application.
my rear shocks were|removethispart|@ $16 ea.

i agree re: dimensions. and how it is good to make friends w/local parts stores and machine shops.

found some old scribbles as i was making my decision.
here it goes:
stock= 12.125 compressed, 18.250 extended (6.125 span)
monroe 55845= 12.250 compressed, 20.125 extended (7.875 span)
looks like i went slightly less than 2" but longer span. must have been thinking |removethispart|@ spring spitting.
i now see i could have gone longer.
like mabe 34761= 13.125 compressed, 21.750 extended (8.625 span), but i forget what that was for......
mustang seemed light and i had to make a decision.
seems ok

BIG DOG; when i bought my mustang cheapo's they were roughly the same price, if i recall it was just shy of 60bucks CDN with taxes. i physically compared them to the crown vics and f150 2wds, not as long as the f150s compressed and i don't think i actually extended the f150s after seeing the larger compresses size, it is however possible that the parts store guy provided me a different shock than others are using.. no way to know now. the mustang shocks i purchased were longer when extended than the crown vics by a little more than an inch. you should be good with what you ordered. it would be great if you could measure them up and post the extended & compressed length with the part number for future reference!

will the cown vic shocks work on a stock 90 tracker. And if so is there anything special that needs to be done to install them
