Title: tire sizes on ur rig
Post by: tracker8wr on October 19, 2004, 05:50:33 AM
i was wondering what type of wheeling every one does and what type and size tires they use.

i run alot of mud, water, sand, and ossasionally go rock crawling. however i have found that my 31" tsl swampers need to be 34 or 35 to run 4and 5 calss rock trails.

also does anyone run the kicker 3 daul case set up.

I'm running 31 procomp muds with 3" suspension and 2" body, and I do just fine pretty much everywhere. I was up at Apex mountain here in BC and ran a class 7 trail rating for the jeep jambeoree. Made it half way without much problem. Only thing that stopped us from going further (jeeps and toys included) was it was very slick and nobody really wanted major damage being everyone was really far from home and wanted to drive it back  ;D ;D ;D. But some of the rocks definately needed 35" tires or bigger. I drove out of there with a scuffed rear diff and a dented gas tank... I have belly skid plates. But On the other hand I feel us zukis being nice and compact I can pick a nice line and drive around the major rocks.

Here are some of the pics..

We run just about any thing here (no sand though). A single trai in tellico will have loose dirt, mud rock hills, you name it. I run 33x12.50 Goodyear MTR's. Alot of people run these in the area and they have great bite in most any terrain.

I typically run moderate trails.  The terrain is usually dry, rocky, with some loose, mogully, steep hills, little mud and no sand.  And snow in the winter.

For tires, I have 30x9.50 BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/As.  Not the largest tires by any means, but I haven't broken anything yet (fingers crossed), and my gearing isn't too far off.

It's up at Apex mountain, it's around Penticton, British Columbia. It was cool and raining. The main reason we where bundled up was that the place was just crazy with misquitos, ate everyone alive with or without bug spray.

i run 31"x10.5" on 15"x8" rims. have had no problems so far, and the MT/Rs are a pretty good all rounder, as there is loose dirt/gravel, mud, sand, hills (loose and rocky) and mud. did i mention mud as well?

anyway, where i am, there's not a whole heap of bog rocks and boulders as you would find in rock crawling, so obviously i dont do it, i'd love to though.

i should've got 32"s, as i have enough room for them to fit and not rub on everything. but for what i'm doing, my vit is sweet.

Get some stronger driveline components first. I cannot stress this enough.

34" LTB's but working on 36's   I'm getting tired of all the mud falling out when i wrench on the Kick so I'm trying a little harder to avoid the big holes.  BUT once it gets dirty all bets are off.

Im hoping my duel t case setup will arrive soon, but i run 33.12.50 mtrs.

Zig you probaby dont have this problem but i found last weekend they weren`t cleaning to well after hitting a mud run it was a clay base and not much water,  they were like racing slicks after 2 mins.

I have 33 x 9.5 BFGoodrich MTs on 7x15 rims. I run +2" suspension and 3" bodylift. I also have a steel front axle and 5:8s. Mainly used for non rocky trails and the occasional bout of mud plugging

:DI am running 36x12.50x15 swamper sx's on 15x8 10 hole aluminum rims.  Best tire I have found to date.  I have a Spring Over with wrangler springs fr and rr, 1" body lift, missing link (home made) fr and rr, Toy axles and lots of fender "massaging" with a 10 lb sledge.  I finally put bump stops in and it make a world of difference.  It's on a 1988.5 tin top Sami.  This size allows me to wheel almost everywhere.  I started in stock (!) form and have run the 31's, 33's, etc.  All good sizes with the proper driveline upgrades.  Good luck!

I'll try it again.

I dont ride in clay mud much, but I have found that MTR's will clean just about as good as other MT tires (not including TSL's and Boggers). But my favoriate part is with you go through a wet, mudy section and then hit rock, it just takes a little spinning ant the MTR's are heated back up and sticky enough to pull you over the rock ;D Not to mention they ride great on the road to.

After seeing how well the Krawlers hooked up on Mikes rig, I'll have to look into getting some of those when the MTR's wear out.

I'm using my 'kick for commuting to work, taking my mountain bikes to trails and camping - probably no offroading.

I have 16's coming in. What tires should I get to fill the wheel wells?

You might want to stay with the 8" rim if your going to run the 12.5" tires so you don't loose your bead so easily.

I run 33x12.5 BFG MTR's on a 15x8" wheel for standard trail runs.  They seem to get the job done, but I just siped them to see if I can get a little more flex without airing down further.  Usually I run around 8 psi on the trail and don't have any issues, will probably start switching down to 6 for rocks and snow.

Standard Spring Over lift, front fenders missing or trimed/hammered out.  Rear fenders cut.

thats would be one big step,  not only do Krawlers only come in 35's and up but from what i hear they bite 10 times harder than a MTR

I've been running 35 x 12.50 X-terrains. Great tires with plenty of bite at 14-16 psi. 4" BDS springs, 5" leafover, breeze folding shackles 5". I see no reason to go any higher and saw a huge difference in performance going to 35's.

That's why I'm going to stay with the 33 MTR's for now. I finally have my drive line where I'm not snapping axles everytime I hit something hard ;) I'm going to enjoy iy for a while before I step up to the next level ;)

We've been running 33's for a year on ALL types of terrain here in Idaho.  Mud, Sand, Snow, Gravel, Dirt, etc.

If you didn't know, we have about 12 inches of supsension lift and no body lift.  (22inches of frame clearance)

The only time I wish I had a taller tire was in Moab on Golden Spike, right before doublewhammy.

Two Jeeps stayed on the main trail ahead of us, all of the other Zuki guys were taking the bypass.
We approached the obstacle the Jeepers did and we didn't have the tire height to get a tire up on the ledge, locked.

The jeeper guys on 37s did, open.  :(

~Nate

P.S.  We run the Kicker 3, with Calmini 4.24's in the Kicker.  (9.66:1 in the t-case alone.)

Its truely awesome.

Which section was that?  There was the rock shelves then the two waterfall-like climbs after Golden Crack that I have pictures of.  We ran though there this last June and I don't remember a spot that we had to take the bypass.  Cept the Double Whammy, had to go around on that one.  :D

It looks like it was in that area.
It was after the stair steps, and before double whammy. (if I remember correctly)

But the one that I'm talking about had a bypass on the left, down through a little, narrow, ravine, with a tree/shrub between it and the primary obstacle.  (they bypass wasn't easy either, 2 zukis scratched their sides on it.

Isn't that video of the Double Wammy?  I had no idea there was a Zuki line and tried going up to the left of that nub sticking out.  Couldn't get the SJ up through there and had to go around through the bypass on the left.  Next time though, that line will be mine. ;D

Is this (http://www.dttm.net/files/135.JPG) the ravine (http://www.dttm.net/files/134.JPG) you are thinking of?  It was just above what I think was the Double Wammy.

The only pictures I have after the stair steps was a short climb here (http://www.dttm.net/files/117.JPG).  We could have missed it though, since we had no real idea where we were going.  ;D
