Title: Notching the Samurai cross member
Post by: sanjuansheriff on February 21, 2008, 08:56:33 PM
Today was the first time I've removed a Samurai transmission.... In the recent past while preparing for it's removal I remember reading of "notching" the cross member for easier transmission removal. I discovered today that the rear of my tranny hits the cross member while trying to remove it and the front of it hitting the clutch on the engine. The part of this tranny that hits the cross member is a 1/4" wide cast aluminum reinforcement webbing  located at the rear.

My question is.....
Is the notch that is cut into the cross member to accommodate this webbing area?
Should this notch be about 1/2" deep and 5/16" wide?
Any pictures of this mysterious and elusive notch?

I did run a searched here but came up with very little information.

Thanks again,
Dennis

Yes, it is cut into the crossmember for the webbing area.
That sounds about right for the notch size......some people just take a big pair of pliers/channel locks/crescent wrench/etc. and just bend the front lip of the flat piece of the crossmember down a little and that is enough for the webbing to clear.
I don't have any pics, but I know some are posted somewhere....maybe on another zuk website.

Great... Thanks Sky for the reply. I will notch it and hope all goes well on the reinstalling.
