Well I did it.... All new bearings and sycros have been installed and it turns smooth as glass ;D. My next step is the gasket sealer and bolt'n it together. I have the Blue RTV/RVT? permatex silicon now but I remember reading that some type of gasket maker that is GREY should be used.... Anyone know the brand name of this grey stuff? I can tell that the factory had used a grey colored gasket goop and then when the legendary magical 60,000 mile main bearing went the transmission shop used the brick red colored stuff. It has never leaked in all these years with either of these products.
If anyone is considering rebuilding a Samurai transmission I would highly recommend doing it... I received lots of great help and encouragement here which made it all possible and a understanding of my rig that I would never gotten by simply writing a check. Thanks again for the help.
Any thoughts on the gasket material/brand?

I just used form a gasket 1B. I don't know if it's correct but it hasn't leaked in 6 months so far. I just put a very thin layer on both surfaces. Just smoothed out with my finger and put it together. Don't use too much because you don't want it breaking lose and getting in a bearing :o so I've heard. Be sure to lube the front shaft area so your throw out works right, also your slip yoke shaft and splines so you don't snag your rear seal on the transmission. Nows a good time to change your rear main seal if it looks or feels stiff. At least I did since it's right there and Napa sells the seal.

Thanks izzle,
Last night after replacing all the bearings I decided to wait for today before closing and bolting it together.... Boy I am happy I decided to wait. I found a C-clip under a shop towel... I rechecked the main gear assembly and found that I forgot one of them in my hast... What a bonehead.

Ross,
I don't want to do mine again for another 175,000 miles... BUT I sure would like to do another as the mystery has been lifted.... Would it be wrong for me to hope that my budd's Sammy tranny fails so that I can help rebuild it?

he might not much care for that
