Title: 96 16V 1.6 engine problem
Post by: sidekick57 on March 06, 2008, 02:53:18 PM
Can anyone help me? I can get it to start and it will run but it idles really crapy and if I feather the gas I can get it rev to 3000 rpms and then it cuts out. When I turn it off I can't get it to start again. it will try to start but it's like it's out of gas. Has someone here had a problem like this? PLEASE HELP!!!

Could be the fuel pump or the screen on it.

Have you got a Check Engine Light showing?

No light, I just put the engine back in and have not driven it. I bought this thing not running and pulled the engine because the timimg gear sliped on the crank and messed it up. I had the crank fixed and put it back together with new bearings, seals , head gasket, timing belt. I'm sure I got the timing set right and the vavles ajusted right. I have good compression. when I pulled the plugs they were full of carbon. I'm thinking the problem is the coil or igniter in the distrbutor. I tested the resistance and it's not the same as what my manual says, so I went to the junk yard and tested one there and it was the same as mine. Now I'm woundering electrical or fuel ??? or if the one at the junk yard is bad too.

I'm not saying this is the problem but when I get the MAF wet in my 96 4dr 1.6 16 v it runs similar... will hardly idle and yes I have to feather it gently to get any power out of it.
Just a thought but I would chack the MAF...
