Guages all work but there are no dash lights. I checked the fuse and it is good.
Could it be the dimmer switch?
Any suggestions?

Check the bulb, it could be blown. And yes it could be the dimmer switch.

most likely dimmer. check it out with meter and see if it has power

SET FIRE TO IT!
jus kiddin, cut the wires and bypass the dimmer if it works replace it.

You've still got tail lights, right? Pretty common for the "instruments" fuse to just run the gauges, but the tail light fuse to run the tail lights AND dash lights. I can't recall when they started that, but I know it was so by the mid-80s.
On my '03 (actually '02 electrics, though), my dash lights kept going out randomly, due to the taillamp fuse blowing randomly. Turned out my trailer wiring harness was drooping behind the bumper and occasionally coming into contact with the exhaust pipe, with its insulation already melted through.

My bet would be dimmer switch. Pulled mine from the panel, tapped it and it worked, went over a bump and it went out. Replacement is in the mail.

...tapped it and it worked, went over a bump and it went out
I'd just tap it again.
Or drive smoother roads ;D
