You might want to know that any vehicle either lifted or lowered more that 4" requires a mandatory Motor Vehicle Inspection in BC and many people do not do it but they can pull you over and force you to have the vehicle towed to an inspection facility (so be polite!) This includes a 3" lift if you are running 2" larger diameter tires!!
In another post I mentioned that welding any steering component is illegal.
Others include not having a rear bumper on any vehicle not registered as a truck (and most SUV's are classified as a passenger vehicle - station wagons to be exact - check your reggie papers if you don't believe me -- In my Subby, I had to remove the rear seats and weld sheet over the mount points before they would accept that it was a "real" cargo area and let me register it as a truck!) - it goes without saying that all vehicles need front bumpers ... and the height of said bumpers is very important too ... they are, of course, higher for trucks than for the afore-mentioned passenger vehicle. Get ready ... a truck must have the lowest part of the bumper 29" from the ground ... an SUV (read station wagon) must be 19" to the MIDDLE of the bumper (height wise.)
If you are lifted, it is required that you install mudguards or mudflaps.
You must be able t get your driver's side window open in order to perform manual signals should your indicator lights fail - ps - any lights out will be grounds for a fine and an inspection even if you already have a valid one.
Make sure all offroad lights have opaque covers or they are unacceptable as "reflective surfaces" - auxiliary riving lamps are an exception but they must be wired to come on with the headlamp high beams.
Do not install rear discs without a mechanical parking brake - linelockers are unacceptable because it is not a redundant system as they utilize the hydraulic system.
The doors cannot be dented in a fashion that makes them more difficult to open than normal, latch must work etc.
No part of the body can be ragged or sharp such that when parked a passing pedestrian could be injured (as it was explained to me by an inspector.)
Hmmm, can't remember any more of the obvious ones.
You can save yourself a lot of hassle by purchasing your own copy of the silver Motor Vehicle Inspection Manual from your local ICBC Inspection facility for approx $30! After I got the MVI done on my Subby, I used to keep the silver book underneath the seat with a tape measure because I got pulled over that often.
Good luck to all the BC wheelers out there!
