Hello all. I had put a timing chain on my tracker about 10k miles ago, and the other day it felt sluggish and then all together weak. Upon further inspection, I realized I was out of time ??? . I bought myself another timing belt and jumped in today. I got the new belt on and timed, started right up, so I put the front of the engine back together, went to pull it out of the garage, and it wouldn't crank :( . I took it all back apart and realized that i had a lot of play in my crankshaft gear, so I pulled it of, and what I saw was horrid. There was a huge chunk missing along side of where the key SHOULD have been. Now a key wont fit in the end of the crank, and being as I was hoping to do a motor swap some day, I figured I would just go ahead and do it now.
I would LOVE to run a Ford v6, because I have access to good, running 2.8's, 2.9's, 3.0's, and possibly a couple of 4.0's. My delima is trying to find an adapter plate so that I can keep my tracker 5spd, and not have to do a complete drivetrain swap. I'll run pretty much whatever I can find, though. As long as I don't have to break the bank on a conversion kit. I'm tempted to run whatever engine I can find along with its 2wd 5spd tranny behind and a Sami TCase. Only problem there is finding a cheap Sami case and I am not sure how to address the offset of the case to the rear end without modifying my rear also........ Basicly, I would like to know what you guys have ran that didn't cost as much or more the tracker was worth.... I have free roam of a junkyard down the road and get whatever I want out of it at half off (my uncle owns it), so give me some ideas. thanks guys.

You could grab a toyota engine tranny and transfercase from the later years where they have the centered rear axle.
Not sure about cost for this of course.
One that is popular is the 1.6 from a track/kick then you just need the conversion kits that many of the dealers on this website sell.
Oh yeah and HEY PHLOOP!!!!!!!!
you could do a search for Samurai Engine swap or Samurai Motor swap

Hello all. I had put a timing chain on my tracker about 10k miles ago,
Before telling me to do a search, you should read my post ;D ....... I'm running a tracker, so I don't think a conversion kit to run a 1.6 would really be neccesary... I DID A SEARCH. But theres not much info on doing swaps in a tracker aside from the 4.3 with the expensive conversion kit. I was asking for alternatives, such as the ford engines that you never see in a tracker. I do like the idea of running the entire drivetrain from a toyota though, engine, tranny, and transfer case, thanks for that suggestion.

if you want to put a 4.0 ford engine in there try these people they might help: https://eshop.advanceadapters.com/commerce/ccc1172-all-engine-to-transmission-adapters.htm

LOL my bad I had been reading a bunch of samurai posts at that point sorry about that.

I think no matter what you go with you could be looking at a whole lot of money.
You could go with an engine and 2wd transmission then use a transfer case from a samurai.
Or if you want to do more than an engine swap you could swap in everything engine trans and t-case axles from a different rig :)

I've often wondered about a bigger 4-cyl like the Toyotas mentioned before. Even a GM or Ford 2.3-2.5L 4-cyl would have almost twice the power of the stocker.
Either that or a diesel but we're pretty handicapped in that department here in the States.
Doubt you'll find a way to cheaply and easily adapt someone else's engine to the Tracker's 5 speed. Not to mention it's highly doubtful the stock tranny would survive long. If you're upgrading to a bigger engine you'd definitely want a beefier transmission than the one designed to survive behind a 1.6L.
