As some of you know my kick has been starting hard for a few months. A while back i was having problems with it running. I checked the ignition timing and it was way out. So I got it back in time but now the engine starts hard. I figured the timing belt jumped so I checked it and it was right on. I took it off and reset it anyway and nothing. I don't know what is the matter with it and I really don't want to take it to the mechanic. Is there a crank sensor or anything that could be bad or any sort of sensor that could be causing this. Thanks Andrew

Wipped out plugs from bad timing ??
-
But why would the ignition timing just jump out of wack like that?
-
There is a a camshaft position sensor.
-
Maybe i should check that
-
have u pulled all the plugs and inspected them all..along with the wires?
-
What year is the Trucklet, some
don't have Crank sensors
Timing jump has to be a bad timing belt,
but you said you looked at that, or it is
possabile you have a sheared pin in the
drive gear of the distributor, but that is
a long shot, as there is no real stress on it
like there is in say a Chevy motor where the
oil pump drives off the bottom of the Distributor
drive shaft
-
Its a 95, I just did the plug wires, I haven't pulled the plugs though. Once its warmed up it starts fine.
-
It's probably plugs
Other than that ???
And I think the 95 has Crank Sensor

-
I'll do the plugs and gap em, see how it goes from there. who knows. I'll also check to see if there is a cam sensor.
-
I just had a thought, the Crank Sensor
doesn't move, and it's mounted in the
oil pump where the pan gasket is, but
what if the half moon key sheared in the
crank, I have seen it before, and it was a
Zook motor too, that could change the
valve timing and affect the distributor
setting moving the timing
Was the timing retarded of advanced
when you found it was off ???
Retarded would be from the belt or the
crank cog slipping
Hope this helps

Thats not what i wanted to hear!!! I believe the timing was.....retarded though. I don't remember. When i put the light on it the mark was way to the right. I think thats retarded. I don't really know off the top of my head.
-
That would be advanced if you
look at the front of the engine,
that would also make the engine ping
and run hot, but power should be
OK, retarded would make it run like crap
-
Well when i first discovered it, it was leaving work in the afternoon. THat morning it had run fine, then i went to leave work and it cranked a little more than usual, I figured nothing of it, then i stepped on the gas and it felt like it wasn't getting fuel. So I limped it home and it sat for a week or so. Then i put the timing light on it and saw it was way out. I had to pull the dist towards me if thats any idication of what it was.
-
That is advance, and a slipped belt
or bad key in the crank could do that
-
How do i check the key in the crank just pull the cog off?
-
If it starts fine once its warmed up, could be the ECT sensor??
-
the distributer on the 16 valve turns the opposite way from the eight valve 1.6 engine, so it could still be a broken key on the crank :-/
-
But if it was a key on the crank being bad, wouldn't it go more and more out of time? I have driven it like this for about 4 months now. I hope it could just be a sensor.
-
Could be the bolt tightened
and now it can't turn anymore,
could be a piece of the key is wedged
between the cog and crank
I took apart a jetski that the nut had
come off the flywheel, hit the case which
screwed it back on and it kept running,
then it came off again, totally destroyed
the key and the crank slot, wierd things
happen, but if you check it all out and
nothings wrong, then I would be puzzled,
because somthing caused the timing to
change, I'm just suggesting things that
could have happened
-
Thanks. I'm just praying thats not it. I don't have time to put my car out of comissino to check that.
-
It's not much more than the resetting
of the belt that you allready did
And think of it as good practice to
keep your skills sharp

So what do I have to do in order to check the key way?
-
Just get it all the way down to the
timing belt, remove the belt and the
bolt in the end of the crank, the cog
should pull off without too much force,
if it is stuck on, there might be a bad
key, I would reccomend using an impact
to remove the bolt, they can be a PITA
otherwise, espesially with an Auto Trans,
can't put it in gear to keep the engine
from rotating.
Now inspect the keyway, key and cog,
if the engine is TDC (Top Dead Center)
the keyway should be up, the notch in
the Cam Sprocket should be down, and
the rotor in the distributor should be pointing
to where #1 (front) Spark Plug wire is at,
if it is pointing at the opposite side, you are
180 out, but the notch in the cam would be
pointing to another spot too I think.
You might find some missing teeth on the
belt, inspect it closley, and cracks or checking
of the backing (smooth side) you should
replace the belt.
Hope this helps
