Hello
Im not to savvy on 4 wheel drive. My Zuk is my first 4x4. I was in 4H the other day when when I tried to get it out it was very very hard. And when it finally did come out there was a very loud clunk, it almost felt like the transfer case fell out. Previous times of using the 4 wheen drive werent so bad. It came out fairly easy and just a light thud. My Brother in law says that its suppose to make a thud, that is how you know its out of 4H. Does any one know why it would be so hard to take it out of 4H this past time? Is there anything that i can check or need to check, like fluid level or bushing or anything like that.
Any help would be great thanks

A little more info on your vehicle would be helpful, but I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that a clunk in the T-case is a bad thing. Especially a loud one!
Definitely check your fluid level - like right now!
Also, was the vehicle moving, sitting still, in neutral, tires straight, or what?
T-case should shift smoothly, especially between 2H and 4H.
-
Also, check to make sure none of your drivetrain mounts are bent, if they are, it may be binding something up....
But yeah, check your fluid!!! :o

its called BAD SHIFTER SHEET
-
it sounds like it might be more than just the shifter sheet. usually don't they affect between neutral and 4 lo. then strand you with the case stuck in neutral
-
i had one do just that

i have had similar problems but only when running on dry ground and making turns next time it does nt come out easy try jacking up the front end completly off the ground and the tires may spin once they stop try taking it out it should be much easier and avoid driving on asphalt or concrete that is dry with the four wheel drive locked in
-
I back mine up a couple of feet befor I shift it.
-
Well i came out of the sand onto concrete, the wheels were straight and i was moving. The Main shifter was in neutral.
So it looks like the first thing that i need to check is the fluid. Will the fluid being low effect drving in 2H?

...Will the fluid being low effect drving in 2H?
Yes, your T-case is used even in 2wd, so fluid level is important.
Oil=cheap
Gears=expensive

Alright
Thanks for all your help. I stopped driving it until this weekend when i can check the fluid. I will let you know what i find.
What type of oil goes into the transfer case?
-
I use Lucas 80-90w, works great for me

What type of oil goes into the transfer case?
My manual calls for API GL-5 SAE 75W-90
3.6 pints
You can use something like Valvoline HP Gear Oil 75W/90
Personally, I like AMSOIL synthetics. A little more expensive, but top notch.

And no, I don't work for AMSOIL! :)

So i changed the oil in the transfer case and both Diff's. Man what a difference. The oil that came out of the transfer case looked like muddy water. Same with the rear diff. The front diff looked like milk. But now that its all new it feels great.
Now for another question.
Can you drive with your wheel hubs locked all the time? or is that not a good thing to do.
Thanks again for all your help.

i have been doin it for years but it does cause your front diff to turn all the time
