can u convert a 2wd transfer case to a 4wd transfer case and if so what parts do you need to acheive it? i have the 2wd case and was wanting to build it for a spare
-
Yes, the trans is the same, just unbolt the tailhousing and add the t-case
-
There is no such thing as a 2wd transfer case it there? What is the point? If so i have never heard of one and have learned something new!
-
it is called a reduction box and YES THEY HAVE THEM FOR SAMURAI's 2wd
and wildgoody is correct.
Here is a picture of a 2wd case next to a 4wd case

The 4wd ones are prettier.
-
what i meant was can you just add a 4wd front housing and an input shaft and shifter and make it a 4wd case?
-
I would think it may be a little more involved. With the elec. connectiontions for the indicator light, and perhaps the inners arn't set up to accept the forward output shaft. Just some thoughts but hell I didn't know a two wheel drive t case(gear reduction box) was even made. ???
-
Yes, Virginia, there is a two wheel drive transfer case.
However - it is really not a transfer case in the strictest sense!
All it really does is take up the space of the 4x4 transfer case so that the rear output shaft is physically located in the same place as the 4x4 t-case so the rear driveshaft and axle are universal between the 2wd and 2wd trucks. Oh and the 2wd transfer case is geared to match the 2-hi mode of the 4wd t-case.

Section 5 describes 2wd transfer case tear-down and reassembly in detail.
Based on the contents of the document mentioned above, the ultimate answer to your question is: No, you cannot rebuild a 2wd transfer case to make it a 4wd unit. It's a WHOLE LOT Cheaper to find a 4wd t-case in a salvage yard.
BTW, your 2wd t-case (heck, the whole vehicle!) is a RARE item! It would be a terrible waste to try to convert such a rare vehicle - much rarer than tintops to be sure! I have actually seen only ONE 2wd Samurai in my travels.

I haven't seen any :(

Iv only seen a 2wd sidekick...once!

I feel stupid

Yes, you can.
You will need the shifter part of the tcase (that bolts in place of that plate on the front side of the 2wd case, the shifter, shift rails, couplers for the front output, a front output shaft, and you can add the 4wd indicator switch to the shifter housing.
As mentioned though, it may be cheaper to just find a 4wd case or find a 4wd with a broken case and swap the parts over to the good 2wd case.

You must not get out much......or you live in a place where 4wd is needed a lot. :P
Here in the central US, I see more 4wd trackicks....but I have seen a lot of 2wds too.

Hello everyone!
A brand new Samurai owner here (FNG) as of 04-23-2008.
Is the 2-wheel drive t-case a reduction box or just an drive offset box?
oh yes...................and................are zuki owners cool with old Jeepers? ;D
-
Basicly it's just a drive offset box.

It IS a reduction box.....it has the same 1.409:1 high range reduction as the 4wd tcase. It also offsets the rear output, just like the 4wd tcase too.
-
Is there actually a reduction for high range?
-
oh yes...................and................are zuki owners cool with old Jeepers? ;D
Yes, we are cool with old Jeepers. New ones too!
We are always looking to expand our minions. Zukers a tolerent lot.

In the city i live i have only seen one and
I have seen some real "O-G" 2wd's in other cities.

ahh So with the 1.409 reduction in the x-case makes it feel like you have 5.25:1 ring and pinion.
Or if you wanted to drop the x-case you would have to run 5.25:1 R&P to get the stock performance.
-
Is there actually a reduction for high range?
Yep, and with the 6.5 gears you put in yours it's even lower :)
-
Is there actually a reduction for high range?
No, I just make the stuff up that I post. :P
Yes, there is a high range reduction in the 2wd tcase.....just like in the 4wd tcase. All 86-95 samurais run the 1.3 engine and the 3.73 axle gears......so just because it is 2wd, doesn't mean it can get away without running the reduction in the tcase.....it would be pitifully slow and underpowered with a 1:1 high range (like the samurais aren't already).

Exactly.
