I am planning on throwing in the towel on my 2dr kick this summer. Everything on it is finnally works great but the rust prevents me from doing a body lift and I will be upgrading. I may have the opportunity for a 2wd kick that has a straight body and frame and used the same 8v engine and is even the same year 1992 and also has the same 5speed. So my question is can my parts from my 4x4 be swapped into the 2wd. How extensive are any modifications necessary and what all is involved?

easy swap right over

does the motor have to be pulled or can the 2wd transfercase be detached and dropped out the bottom? How about the front end spindles? I assume the 4wd ones have to be swapped over right? All bolt holes there?

Whether you have to swap the tranny or just the transfer case will depend on which 2wd tranny is in there. There were 2 different ones. One uses a dummy t-case and your tcase will bolt right on. The other is a pure 2wd tranny with no dummy case and you will have to either swap your entire transmission/tcase over or fab up a sammy type divorced tcase to work with your 2wd tranny. Keep in mind the second option of fabbing a custom tcase will probably require custom driveshafts.
The front diff has 3 mounts on the frame of the 4wd: one on each side and one in the middle. The left or driver's side mount on the frame is missing on the 2wd models(usually) and you will have to cut it off the 4wd's frame and get it welded on to the 2wd's frame. Other than that, the other 2 mounts are already there on the 2wd frame.
The rest of the stuff swaps right over, like the front spindles, hubs, cv shafts and driveshaft. The fact that the 2wd has the 5 speed as well means the rear axle already has the correct ring and pinion to match the front diff from the 4wd, so you wont even have to open the diff housing, just bolt it up once you get the hanger in there. The 2wd front spindles have caps covering the hole for the cv shafts, you might be able to knock them out instead of swapping over the spindle, but it might leave spot welds behind that could mess stuff up. Good luck with your swap!

i don't think the spindle bore is the correct size for the axles (its to small). use 4by ones. stan

I have heard the same thing.
