Title: Nissan Engine Swap Help. PLEASE RESPOND ASAP!!!!!!!
Post by: celouden on May 01, 2008, 06:29:14 PM
I am doing a job at a house that has a 79' Datsun 280zx.   It has the nissan L28 (2.8 liter straight 6) engine.  It is rear wheel drive, electronic fuel injected, and has a turbo option.  the base hp for this car is 170hp.  the car is complete and was running when parked, |removethispart|@ 2 years ago.  It has a 5-speed.  The car was offered to me, and I need to know if it would be a possible swap into one of my Samis.  I need to know quick as this job is almost over, and I wont take the car if I can not swap it.

thanks.

Run cooling lines and throw the rad in the back... I have no idea if a sammi case will take 170hp though.

how much?????    ;D ;D

it is in memphis area, the customer has not said whether it was free or not, but I imagine if we did have to pay for it, it would be VERY VERY cheap....like $200.00 ish.

My friend has a Datsun 1982 280z with L28et motor (yes turboed), from what I remember, the tranny is longer than the Sami Tranny.  And I think somewhere on izook.com  It has an article on swapping in rotary 12A motor in the Sami.  So, I would think that the swap would be very similar with 280z with some modifications.  The width would fit just fine, but its the Length.... would be a tight fit.  But, if you have this chance to pick up this car for less to free, I say go for it.  Just have some patience and it ll be done.  Welder and Torch on hand.  You're good to go.

There are two versions of the the Nissan/Datsun 5-speed gearbox, a short and a long output shaft option the short version is about 6 inches shorter. I'm not sure which is in the Z car, my skyline of the same era had the short version (until I broke it).

A L28 is waaaaay longer than a 12A, I reckon with the water pump hard against the grill you'd still have to cut the firewall, they are also quite tall due to the valve/cam setup and weigh heaps.

On the plus side: they also used the L28 in the MQ Nissan Patrol, so you could buy a bolt up gearbox/transfer case combo.

with the kit. *shakes head* its ridicilous expensive.  The way I see it, dollar against the kit.  Its cheaper to fab motor mounts etc than getting the kit for the price.  4.3 Vortec motor is a very nice engine.  I would definitely get one if i had the chance.

Fab up motor mounts and transmission,t-case mounts cut out the channel and re fab up the channel.
