When I try to start my Samurai the starter winds up and I can hear it spinning but it doesn't engage with the engine. Should I just replace the starter?
Thanks

sounds like the drive gear mechanism is screwed up.
i don't mess with them anymore and get a rebuilt from kragen auto parts(cause that's local + lifetime warranty).
i do that with alternators also, and have had pretty good service outa them.
i suspect you have a local parts place that does the same?
-
Yes I can get a lifetime exchange warranty from the local part store. I did test the solenoid and it's working so I think it's either the starter gear or the slip clutch.
Does anybody have any tricks for getting the starter out of the Samurai? It's looking like that bolt on the top is going to be tough to get out.
-
probably like my 1.3 kick-
the top bolt has a nut in back?
it was fun wiggling it out after unbolting. same with install.
-
I just pulled my starter out a week ago, and then just threw it back in.
That top bolt with a nut isn't to bad to get to but you defiantly have to wiggle your arm in there. The bottom one is a piece of cake.
Don't forget the bracket that goes between the starter and the bell housing when your putting it back in.

is my kick supposed to have a bracket also?
(sorry to piggyback, but i just wondered)
-
roll it then pop it in gear just to turn the flywheel a bit could be missing a tooth right where its sitting, also check the starter bolts mine used to come loose alot and grind teeth
-
Im not sure if kicks have the bracket too but on a sami, theres bracket that goes in there that holds 2 lines in place.
Mine was out when i pulled the starter, who ever did it before forgot to put i back in.
There were never any starter issues caused by it not being there.

I've pop started it a couple times and the problem keeps coming back so I guess I'm going to have to pull the starter.
So you guys that have pulled the starter out, did you remove the heater hose above that top bolt? Did you just use a socket wrench on the bolt or what?
Thanks for all the help by the way, you guys are great!

I didn't pull any lines off, just worked my arms in around them.
Gear wrenches make life sooo much easier!

DITTO for gear wrenches!

Gear wrenches, great idea! I'd seen them but never bought any. I'll pick some up and give it a try.
