Title: Lectrified fuel pump installation on carb'd sammy?
Post by: samurai87 on May 05, 2008, 06:15:51 PM
I would like to put an electric fuel pump on my '87 sammy I've already bought the pump and the guy at the store said you can mount the electric pump on the frame and pump it through the old mechanical one. Is this the best way to do it ? how much wiring/ time should I expect it  to take?

i have considered an electric pump also, but haven't bothered yet(stock works fine).
when i do, however, i will remove the mechanical and push rod and make a block-off plate.
i'm sure you can flow it thru the pump(pull push rod out) but why clutter the engine?
i'm running a weber and pressure regulator and would use a very low capacity pump.
probably should run a regulator for a stock carb. also.
just my thoughts.

thanks rascott.
how hard would it be to make your own block off plate?

simple enough. piece of that soft aluminum flat bar stuff you can get |removethispart|@ a hardware store, trace out using gasket as template, cut w/hacksaw, drill a couple holes, dress-up with file and bolt on.
did my egr plate that way.
many times on other cars.
empi makes a nice, very small, inexpensive fuel pump that will put out mabe 4psi fuel pressure.
plenty for these little motors.

I wouldn't feed through the stock pump. The diaphram (sp) tends to go porous with age which can lead to engine damage. May as well get shot of it if you're not going to use it.

Depending on the length of your new pump, replacing the existing fuel filter is a great place to stash it.  If you do this, make sure your pump has a fuel filter on the input side, most of the little auto store pumps do.

I actually ran a new ground wire along with a 12V line all the way back to the fuel pump from the engine compartment, but you can just clean a spot on your frame for the ground and just run a single hot wire.  You will want to use a relay to keep it from blowing fuses on your normal electrical system.  Plus is just makes things cleaner.  You can just run a line from the hot wire going to your coil over to the relay to activate it so the relay works when the engine is on.

Going into the engine compartment, just use the fuel line that normally runs into the fuel pump and re-route it to the carb.  The fuel line is a little large, but just run two hose clamps and you shouldn't get any leakage.  I might have run a new longer hose, but I can't remember.

As for the stock fuel pump, I just capped it off and left it.  When I had a Triumph I made a block off plate like rascott mentioned.

Definately pull the old pump.AS was stated,a block off plate is easy to make and cheap.
You will probably need a fuel pressure regulator to prevent overpressure, and a relay is an excellent idea.

just a thought on the relay.
unless the pump has a large amp. draw, you shouldn't need one.
when you get into high capacity pumps- like for fuel injection- when you need considerable pressure, it becomes a different story.
fuse the circuit. chassis ground should be fine and, perhaps, may be done |removethispart|@ mounting screws.
now i'm starting to think |removethispart|@ doing this myself- thanks a lot.

thanks guys for all the feedback. just two more question for ya guy's.... I think. Would a 5 psi pump (the one that I bought) be too much pressure for the samurai  and how much $$$ should I expect to pay for a regulator?

5 psi sounds ok to me.
i have used empi regulators for years. |removethispart|@$30 from j.c.whitney.
couple of bucks for some hose fittings and mounted to the firewall.
i understand holley makes a good one , but i've never tried them.

Ya I ran mine 88.5 sammy like this for 2 years. I mounted mine right where the stock fuel filter goes on the frame by making a new plate and using the stock holes to mount it.  I also got a fuel pressure regulator from autparts store, the dial type and ran it about 3.0-3.5 PSI.  Loved it.  But its always good to have a spare electric pump on hand if your out on the trails and yours happens to go out.

Making a plate to block off the old pump area is easy as above posts mentioned.

Does anyone know what the manual claims the required fuel pressure is for the Samurai?  I know my SJ-410 claims it wants 6.5-7lbs so I went with a 7-8lb fuel pump, no regulator.

i only have a chilton's manual, so it doesn't say. in fact it's only vaguely useful most of the time.
however, carburetors only need enough fuel to keep the float bowl full, and more pressure than required to get the gas to the carburetor can become a problem if it gets too high.
i set my pressure regulator |removethispart|@ 2 lb for my weber.
