Title: Headers and Exhaust... Which one to get?
Post by: johnhenry on May 09, 2008, 01:18:54 PM
Hello,

I am in the market to get new Headers and Exhaust, but don't know what would be the best for me.

-I would like something that has a nice deep tone, but I dont want it to sound like a Honda.
-I also like in California, so I would like it to be street legal.
-Price wise I would like to stay around $400-700.
-Would a K&N Filter help too?

What can I expect to gain with the set up on a stock sidekick?

How does Thorley compare to Calmini?

It seems a lot of people here have that one too. Does it sound different?

i'm in california also and have to smog every two years.
calmini hasn't gotten certified yet(still working on it, i understand), but doug thorley has been.
i've been researching a little- just can't rationalize it yet.

The motor only has 100 hp to start off with. There is no way you are going to get 30% more power out of it by changing the exhaust. You can expect maybe 5 hp increase at the best. Quite a while back Zaggy rebuilt a 1.6 with head porting, cam, full rebuild and exhaust etc and got about 12 - 15 hp increase on that engine(someone can correct me if i'm wrong). From personal experience you will notice the gains in the upper RPM range not so much off idle.

Here is Zaggy's build thread, it's a bit long but you can surf through it to find the important stuff.

A lottle increase in gas mileage usually comes with it as well.Din't expect a huge difference, but with gas nearing $4 a gallon any improvement is sweet!!

I love my combo which is the Doug Thorley header with 2.25 pipe into a high flow cat then immediately into a resonator then into a turbo muffler.  The resonator makes the big difference in sound.  I hate the high pitch rattly tingy noise the suzukis make and the resonator will bounce that back and cancel it out.  Mine now has a nice growly flowmaster sound and it is nice and quiet during average driving and growls under load and if you run up to redline and back off you get the little cackles in the exhaust too.  I bought the stainless steel resonator on ebay for about $30, header from RRO for $245, turbo muffler from farm and fleet for $50 and then pipe from autozone for about $30.  I did get a noticable increase in performance mostly when driving into the wind and not having to downshift.  Not sure about the mpg.  Plus the smile every time I rev it up in the garage before shutting it down... Priceless.

ya a lil i drove a friends kick that was the same lift and tire set up and mine deffinetly had a lil more power, all power is at higher rpms though, gas mileage after the exhaust system cold air intake, spark plugs, high spark wires, and preformance radiator, im running with the EGR valve out about 26mpg thats mixed driving and NW area so its pretty hilly.  The entire exhast set up was 200 even for header new cause i called thorley themselves and talked them down proce wise lol, the spin tech was 50, cat was 50 pipeing was 100 tip 15.  all that was from a freindly exhaust shop and since i put decals from their business on my rig they gave me a deal.  i think its cause my rig is so noticeable.

Also, do you have the part number, or kind of spintech muffler you have. I think I might just copy your setup, but was wondering what exact muffler you have thanks.
