I've been hearing a radio commercial for somewhere near me, that they will fill your tires with nitrogen with free refills.
What is the pro's and con's of inflating your tires with nitrogen?
-
for 4x4's and passenger cars nitrogen filled tires are of no use. for race car tires nitrogen maintains tire pressure, by not expanding when heated. regular compressed air is all you need.
nitrogen is chemicaly inert, and displaces oxygen.
carbon dioxide will change tires pressure during temerature changes, also when co2 is mixed with moisture it forms carbolic acid. if someone were to only use co2 in there tires over a period of time carbolic acids would form, and deteriate the rubber of the tires, and steel rims would rust on the inside. for in the field quick tire fills, and to operate power tools co2 works great, but you should replace co2 filled tires with compressed air afterwards.

Just to clarify: All gas expands when heated. Nitrogen is a gas. It is more chemically inert than oxygen, as pointed out, and is DRIER. No moisture in it due to the manufacturing process that separates the nitrogen from oxygen that makes up air. It is the lack of moisture that results in the pressure stability under differing temperature that racers like.

OK, cool :o :-/
Thanks for the info!

yes the best property of nitrogen is it's ability to displace moisture. i forgot to add that as i posted that after waking up on the couch at five in the morning :) man my neck is sore, dam couch. that's why binoculars, and scopes are nitrogen filled, they don't fog up in differing temperatures.

Cool I didn't know that, makes excellent sense.
Dude don't you have a bed? ???

When I road raced motorcycle's we put nitrogen in the tires for the reason Agent Orange said. But wouldn't be of much use in a 4x4.
-
I watched a documentary about a group
of 4x4s that went to Greenland, and they
filled their tires with Nitrogen to keep the
pressures stable, even at sub zero temps
And it can't hurt anyway. Compressed air
has moisture in it, and can cause rust inside
the wheels too.

I was at COSTCO today and saw this.

So does this meen your gonna try it HOTROD?

Ya, gotta rotate the air in my tires anyways ;)

On Second thought. Airing up and down my tires everytime I go wheeling I would think it would get spendy pretty quick. ;D
Maybe Helium.
It'll Make the Tracker float over the rocks  ;)

Once or twice a year I have to have my tires removed to get the water and mud out of them. Running them at 4-6 psi through the mud is good for that.  I don't think Nitrogen would help me out. (Never totally blown a beed though)
Glad Discount does that for free when you buy their tires.  ;D  Matter of fact I need to get them done now before winter hits.

I worked with a guy that had his snow tires filled with cloride on his S-10(2wd)
Swore it was the best snow vehicle he has had????
Don't know if I beleave him though?
-
i have been known to run with FEROUS OXIDE in the tyres on my truck ;)
usually from picking up the odd rusty nail or screw :P
sorry couldn't resist it 8)
