What is the normal idle speed for a fuel injected 8-valve motor? I noticed under the hood that it says 800 RPM but my tach says it's about 3200....
Now I put this tach in from a 1991 four door Sidekick but I don't think it should make any difference.
The other thing is that my engine sounds normal like it always has before I put a tach in there.
So is my tach's setting off or is this normal? I don't think it's off, because it reaches the red line at just the right speed when I can't push her no more, all the more reason for me to think this is all normal.
Any ideas or comments? :)

800-900rpm is normal..if u are running at 3k rpm at idle u have some serious problems :o
im not sure how to adjust the idle on these cars though..so alas im not much help

But it has the same idle sound that I can remeber as far back as I can...it doesn't sound like it's racing....when the idle drops below 3200 it almost feels like it's going to stall.
Maybe it's just my tach that needs adjustment.
But then again, it reaches redline at about top highways speed so it looks "normal".

Mine idles from 900-1500 depending on if it's warmed up or not.

Mine does just like explosivo's
900-1500

Ditto for mine 900 warm, 1500 cold

Sounds like the tach is the problem.
It could be dirty and/or sticky inside and not running correctly below 3200 RPM and still run just fine above 3200.
The cable didn't get crimped or anything did it?
I had a speedo that would read 0 until about 30 MPH and then it'd be fine. A little spray-on-lube into the cable housing and it was fine.

If it was idling at 3200rpm you would know about it. It must be the tach. Was the tach from a 16V? (1991 sounds bit early for one). This is an electric tach right? I think it must be the wrong type or pickup, it sounds like the tach is running 4 times as fast as it should. Maybe its getting a signal every time the engine fires and only expects one every time one cylinder fires - I'm guessing here.

It's the tach and speedo combo from a 1991, or so I was told it was a '91. I don't know if it was the 16V or not...probably was though I'm thinking. There is no wire running to it, just the input patch cables that plug into the clsuter from the back.  The speedo has a cable with grease to help it rotate and it works perfect.
Well anyhow, it seems normal to me...I love have a tach even if it doesn't match what a normal Sidekick is suppose to read.

Thanks man, but you can thank Derek Riggs for that. :)
